Fairbanks sees a bright holiday as the sun dips below the horizon for hours and the Northern Lights paint the sky. Churches prepare for Christmas Day even as darkness lingers and mail runs begin early from North Pole post offices with Santa outfits and postmarks.
Eskimo customs and church faith shape holiday life across Alaska with toy drops by Kodiak base and imported trees from Nevada. Guy Okakok recalls Christmas Eve in Barrow urging thanks and prayer as temperatures reach 30 below zero.
If you cannot visit your elderly parents this Christmas, write them a letter recalling your Christmas holidays, tell how you enjoyed the merrymaking and meals, describe a favorite toy, and consider sending a taped greeting. They may value these memories more than a physical gift.

The White House said the 49 star flag design will be announced by President Eisenhower this month or January. A proclamation making the nation a 49 state union will follow Alaska’s Nov. 25 electors and Hawaii’s possible admission could yield a 50th star. The design committee includes top cabinet officers and the Fine Arts Commission chairman. No formal procedure exists for rearranging the flag though 25 changes have occurred since 1789. the 48 star design was authorized in 1912 after Arizona and New Mexico joined.
Juneau author Robert Mines, a psychologist with the Alaska Department of Health, wrote My Mind Went All To Pieces. Published by Dial Press, the humor collection rapidly went into a second printing and drew wide national attention in Look and Newsweek.
