Three husband wife teams judge the business displays this week. Winners in all categories announced after Christmas. In prize breaks the top prize is 35 dollars with second 26 and third 35 in the business category. Organization and boat categories offer 35 for first 25 for second and 15 for third. Chamber officials said judging would allow merchants to sell merchandise from their displays.
City leaders reject replacing existing boat taxes with a 17 mile property levy. Vessel owners threaten migration if taxes rise, urging parity with Seattle rates. Leaders set Jan 3 4 for joint meetings with Wrangell and Rake to discuss revenue sharing and harbor issues.
Petersburg officials restarted the search for a city manager after a tentative appointee withdrew. The mayor said salary remains open and the council will seek an experienced manager, continuing the town’s efforts to fill the position.
Petersburg High hosts a four team weekend basketball tourney with Wrangell Rake Fairbanks Monroe. Friday schedule has Wrangell vs Kake and Petersburg vs Monroe at 7 and 8 30 p m. Saturday features elimination and final games.
The Petersburg Lions Club will host a free film for children through fifth grade next Wednesday. The Viking Theater will screen the 1 p.m. showing The Three Stooges in Orbit along with several cartoons.
A high school Christmas program is set for 1 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium. The event, open to the public, features the School band and chorus and a presentation by speech students.
Wrangell faces terminal trouble after Alaska Airlines prefabricated terminal crates arrived mixed with Petersburg’s. Officials say Petersburg’s terminal will be shipped home once the mixup is corrected, leaving Wrangell awaiting its own terminal setup.
The school column muses on a Christmas pageant with a Bethlehem theme and a creche style scene. It jokes about wigs and fashion in a playful tone while contrasting traditional methods with new approaches in education and culture.
