Alaska Territory reports record cash balance for 1944

Territorial Treasurer Oscar G. Olson releases a report showing a September 30 1944 cash balance of 1 352 111 47 the highest in history. Fishing licenses and liquor taxes were top revenue sources with 1 648 842 94 and 1 261 650 00 respectively. Receipts total 6 471 170 35 including federal grants.

Mrs Royal James Dies in Town Visit

Mrs. Royal James died suddenly last night after visiting at the John Bean apartment she had recently moved into town from Kake. She collapsed at the scene and died at the hospital from an apparent heart attack. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Time to Publish Alaska Edition of Time Magazine

Effective December 15, a Northern Air Express Edition of Time will be sent to Alaska Time readers. Aimed at Alaska subscribers, the edition will arrive the same day as copies sent to the continental United States, similar to the existing South America edition.

Mrs Hofstad Dies Suddenly While Visiting Seattle

Word arrived Tuesday of the sudden death of Mrs Morton Hofstad who was visiting Seattle. Mr Hofstad and two daughters Mrs John Jones and Ida departed immediately for Seattle with no further information available.

Health department outlines seal sale funds use

Dr. Bernita N. Block says funds from a seal sale support vital programs. The money funds X rays for crippled children, for underinsured pregnant women, and a TB screening project for high school students including X rays for freshmen and seniors and TB tests for sophomores and juniors. The aim is early detection to curb tuberculosis among teens.

Standard Oil boosts 6th War Loan with Petersburg bond purchase

Standard Oil Company of California announced a $6,000 purchase of 6th War Loan bonds to be credited to Petersburg’s sales. The firm has already bought $15 million in total during the drive, including $100,000 in Alaska and $6,000 in Petersburg, following its pattern from prior drives.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz announced carrier based air strikes destroying 91 Japanese planes and hitting air fields on Luzon while conducting three new land based raids on Iwo Jima. The operations targeted air fields and harbors, with 14 enemy planes shot down and 77 destroyed on the ground.

Post Office Opens Evening Window for Christmas Mail

The post office will be open 7 to 9 p m next Monday to accept mail for the last southbound Christmas boat. Postmaster Richard Brennan urges sending mail early as limited service may be available Tuesday morning. After the boat, only air mail will reach the States before Christmas.
