A harbor project advances as piling is driven for boat stalls after A J Trones wins approval at a special council meeting. The crew pulled 3 piles and drove 13, with cargo movements and mail and surplus property handling noted. FWS patrol vessel conducted a survey last week while most harbor activity remained quiet.
Anchorage's Herbh Hilscher reports Alaska has over 17 million acres of potential oil lands filed. Standard of California to invest 30 million dollars in Kenai development with three drilling rigs. Oil scouts and lease activity surge as Canadian firms eye Alaska prospects amid public Moose 4. Oil hearings. Hilscher travels from Ketchikan to Juneau for Petroleum Development Co. dealings.
Mrs. Frank Postlethwaite of Vancouver arrived yesterday to visit her brother Forrest Fryer and family. This is her first trip here.
Union Oil sits atop the Elks men's league with 4 wins, 0 losses as Rainier trails. Standings show Petersburg Processor's 6-2, Parr's 5-3, several teams at 4-4, and Libby McNeill 3-5. Sanitary Market leads six game pin fall with 1,227. Jack Longworth and Werner Israelson each posted 200 games. Longworth had the high 541 series.
Eiler Wikan was re elected president of the Sons of Norway at a regular meeting last week. Officers include Andy Wikan as vice president and Tom Thompson as financial secretary with several other posts filled. The group discussed a proposed May 17 celebration as a tourist attraction and decided not to sponsor but would assist the Chamber of Commerce if it chose to sponsor the event.
Jim Martin, former operator of Red Top Taxi in town, flew to Ketchikan this week to pursue new business interests and engagements.
The Alaska Fish and Game Commission in Juneau proposes regulations for next season to be forwarded to the U S Fish and Wildlife Service. It urges earlier issuance, simplification of rules, and integration of certain minor fisheries into separate sections. The panel favors abolishing fish traps, or at least allowing opening in closed periods, and supports prohibiting snagging near population centers and limiting nets to at most two thirds across channels.
The housing committee for the L. L. Wingard Invitational basketball tournament, December 27–28, seeks lodging for 33 visiting students and managers, eight housed so far. Participants include Juneau Sheldon Jackson Wrangell against PHS. Contact Ben T. Smith at 419 box 1061.
Petersburg's annual Christmas program will be presented Thursday at 8:00 p.m. by the PHS chorus, speech class, brass group, and fifth to seventh graders. The feature is Fred Waring's Christmas Crib with staged nativity figures. Karen Olsen and Mike Schwartz oversee the production and invite the public.
The Elks lodge ABC affiliated men’s bowling league will hold a stag dinner and annual meeting at the Elks hall this Saturday. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and trophies for last year’s winners will be awarded. Officers will be elected and attendance is free to league members who contributed during last season. The Health Council meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the Health Center at 7 p.m. St. Andrew's Country Fair is set for Friday December 6. The Health Center Clinic operates every Thursday afternoon from 2 to 4 15.
The council holds sessions on the first and third Mondays of each month. The Hospital Guild meets on the second Friday each month at 2 p.m. The WCTU gathers on the last Tuesday of each month.

An Alaska Coastal PBY made an emergency landing at Juneau Municipal Airport after circling the capital for two hours. Thirteen Wrangell High School players and staff rode the craft, with pilot Carl Bloomquist and co pilot George Straiger. The crew hand locked a faulty nose wheel to complete a safe landing ten miles north of Juneau. The Wrangell team remained in Juneau to play against Juneau High School, with rescheduled trip to Haines planned for Sunday.
Petersburg Emblem Club scheduled a Christmas tea for December 29, with a potluck at 4 p.m. Santa to arrive at 5:30. The club will host visiting basketball players from Wrangell Juneau and Sitka for the L. L. Wingard Invitational Tournament on December 28 and plans a February charity play for the school band.
Petersburg representatives Ralph Hall and colleagues Charles Graham Dave R Klein and Joe Johnson joined the Stikine Sportsmen's annual game dinner in Wrangell last Saturday night. Hall sits on the Alaska Game Commission while the others are Fish and Wildlife Service employees.
The High School Department offers eight home game season tickets for six dollars each. Only 60 seats are available. L. L. Wingard Tournament tickets sold separately. Students may buy tournament tickets at the High School. Gym seating expanded by Elks Tournament Committee. Ice rink flood to begin after stump removal with lights arriving from Seattle.
ANB quintet led by Dick Kito dominates Sheldon Jackson Junior College 77 to 47. Kito scores 46 points as Gardner adds 18 for SJJC. Petersburg J Tagaban Lyons Keanu Hanson and others contribute scattered points.
The P H S Vikings defeated the faculty 42 to 34 in the 57 58 basketball opener. W Allen led with 11 points while Rex Crase scored 13 for the faculty. The Vikings led all game and prepared to face two town teams next.
Parks and Reid lead the Hammer and Wikan deer derby results announced Monday. Richard Parks won the Hammer, Stanley Reid captured largest horns, Tex Blankenship earned a hunting knife, Burton Lyons a second knives, Knute Anderson a $25 defense bond for longest deer, with Jim Hammer thanking participants and FWS biologist Dave Klein for judging help.
Mr and Mrs Eric Fugloog were plane passengers this week en route to the United States for a visiting trip.

Mrs. Burton Clark and son Brian flew to the states this week and will be joined by Mr. Clark next Tuesday for visits to Idaho Utah and California. Mr. Clark is with the Forest Service here.
The American Legion and Auxiliary host a Christmas potluck Monday evening December 16 at the Sons of Norway Hall. Dinner begins at 5 45 followed by a musical program. Santa Claus will stop with gifts for youngsters, according to Auxiliary ladies.
Petersburg ministers gathered at the Edward Hughes home for a meeting of the Petersburg Ministerial Association. Rev. Ron Snelling was named president for 1958 with Rev. Albert Sayers as secretary-treasurer, succeeding Rev. Hughes and Rev. Joseph A. Luthro. Two New Year’s Eve services were planned, one at the Salvation Army led by Capt. Lester Holmes, and another at the Lutheran Church by four ministers, both at 11 p.m. A Lutheran service at 9 p.m. with lunch at 10 p.m. followed. Mrs. Hughes hosted a postmeeting meal for ministers and wives.
