The Ketchikan Chamber notes a favorable logging mill outlook after a contract with Dupont to boost capacity to 500 tons daily for 12 to 18 months. It also reports ongoing work on a Southeast Alaska ferry system and planning for a May 16 smorgasbord for the 17th of May festival.
Juneau report says fisheries case against Tom Rustad skipper of the Encore failed to gain Supreme Court review. Four justices needed for a hearing. only two favored it. Rustad, represented by Faulkner Banfield and Boochever, appeals a $4500 illegal fishing conviction and crew sentence.
On Monday December 15 at 6 p.m. the American Legion and Auxiliary hold their annual Christmas pot luck dinner at the Sons of Norway Hall. Santa Claus will attend with a gift for each child up to twelve years old.
The Petersburg Emblem Club held its December 9 meeting and invites all for the Elks Emblem Club Christmas party on December 21 from 4 to 6 p.m with Santa at 5 30. Donations were made to local Christmas baskets and a $25 gift to Pioneer Home in Sitka Alaska. Officers named include Mrs Gordon Parr assistant Supreme Organist and Mrs Erling Husvik on the Supreme Banquet Committee, with Mrs Adolph Mathisen co chairing the 1959 Emblem Club convention. The All Alaska Emblem Clubs meeting discussed forming an Alaska State Council. The Petersburg Christmas Tea will be December 28 from 3 to 5 p.m and the next meeting is January 12 1959.
Petersburg High School Vikings begin the 1958 59 season with a practice game against the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department and a following scrimmage versus Petersburg ANB. Coach Steve Laposki plans extended court time for 15 players with a duo offense and man to man defense. Laposki praises Mt Edgecumbe as toughest in league and labels his squad as dark horses while noting key players and newcomers. ANB Craig Klawock All Stars visit Petersburg next week as basketball returns to town after player losses to the armed forces.
Fred Haltiner announces the Elks annual Purple Bubble Ball to be held tomorrow at the Elks Hall. Frances Mangnan will provide music arriving from Juneau weather permitting. Prizes will be awarded and attire is semi formal.
The Salvation Army drive in Petersburg was within $54.11 of its $1,200 quota on December 1, per Capt. Lester Holmes. Those who have not contributed are urged to give now so the drive can be officially completed.
The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce road committee will urge the legislature to create a highway planning commission with a full time highway planning director. Jack H. White said the committee wants road decisions guided by the governor and the highway director, acting on the commission’s advice.

Regular meeting set for Monday at 7 30 p m to appoint a zoning committee and select a light plant superintendent. Mayor Williams urges residents to submit names to councilors or the city office by Monday. The committee aims to draft a zoning ordinance reflecting all areas of Petersburg and will hold hearings before recommending a final law. Copies of Wrangell Juneau and Anchorage zoning laws have been received.
Alaska Steamship Company buys two 10,600 dead weight Liberty ships to bring its fleet to 15 units and expand weekly Alaska run capacity. The Transpacific and the Transatlantic are to be delivered in spring with improved propellers and heavy-lift gear while slated for Alaska names.
Notice to members to attend a 1:00 p.m. Sunday meeting at the Pastime Cafe to vote on the 1958 salmon settlements and future boat shares. Attendance is imperative as Sunday’s vote will be final.
Marine Sgt. Gerald Lemke son of Wm Lemke of Petersburg has been awarded a three year good conduct medal. He serves with the Marine Corps on Okinawa. He spent a summer in Petersburg about four years ago.
The Sons of Norway announces new officers for the year including President Eiler Wikan and Vice President Louie Severson. Other posts list Andy Wikan Bernadine Trones Alice Stafford Lorraine Thompson Willie Rodenburg Jean Norheim Tom Thompson Ida Severson Marie Hammer Roger Wikan Norman Hammer Alma Wallen. A card party is planned for December 18 and the annual Christmas potluck with Santa Claus for children is set for Saturday December 27.
The Lutheran Junior and Senior Choirs present a Christmas Choral Service next Sunday at 4 PM in Petrs burg. About 50 voices perform two anthems and join the congregation in at least six hymns, under directors Colleen Swanson and Margaret Luthro with Rev. Joseph A. Luthro contributing.

Temperatures will range 26 to 38 degrees with a brief cold snap around mid morning last Saturday dropping to near zero, then rising to 16 by noon. A half inch of rain and snow has fallen over the past week.
A Fish and Wildlife Service survey shows widespread high hunter success across Southeast Alaska towns with Peters burg Wrangell area exceeding 90 percent. Biologist Dave Klein notes abundant deer and November snows produced ideal conditions and liberal harvest may aid winter survival despite a large annual herd, barring severe winter.

Arvid Espeseth Pat Anderson and others fly between Anchorage Juneau Wrangell Ketchikan and Seattle. Several residents return from Wrangell and Juneau in a steady pattern of weekly air travel.

A grandson named Mark was born on November 26 in Los Angeles to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moorehead. Mrs. Moorehead is the former Elsie Espeseth. Mr. Moorehead works as a psychiatric consultant in the city for a Jewish Brethren rehabilitation center.
Jim Burnett, service officer for the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Alaska, will be in Petersburg this weekend to assist veterans with benefits questions. Veterans may contact him through the local VFW post or at the hotel.
A Petersburg contingent attended Wrangell's 17th annual Stikine Sportsmen's dinner last Saturday night. Notables from Petersburg included Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ohmer, Mr. and Mrs. Lew Williams Jr., Chuck Graham, Joe Johnson, Dave Klein, T. F. Smith, Eilert Holbeck, Burton Clark and Ralph Hall.
There will be no St Andrew's Guild meeting next Thursday December 18. Instead square dancing for parish members starts at 7 o'clock in the parish hall.
