San Francisco reports shipowners on the Pacific Coast will resume negotiations with maritime unions by week’s end. Assistant Secretary Edward McGrady calls it cheerful news. Since the strike began about 100000 workers have been affected directly or indirectly.
City council discussed securing a 10000 grant to aid the Petersburg Main Street improvement with Stratton and Beers engineers. They urged contacting Juneau for assistance while the Finance Committee reported 12000 in the treasury.
Last Saturday Thomas Winsor and sixteen 12 and 13 year old Scouts hiked eleven miles to Mit kof Highway. John Allen picked them up and drove them to Oh mer's Camp. Next Wednesday at 8 o'clock in the American Legion hall an Investiture Service will present Tender foot Badges to Jerry Elsemore Cecil Anderson Horace Adams Jr John Robert Otness and Howard Sarff. Second Class badges will be awarded to Richard Wyckoff and Erling Jensen. First Class badges go to Billy Stedman Tom Thompson and Laurence Molver. The school band under John Honn will perform. Court of Honor members Ralph Reeser chairman Frederick Nelson Harold Dawes are troop committee for American Legion Post No. 14. Parents and adult friends may attend.
City council clarifies coasting rules for children with Post Office Hill allowed 6 to 9 pm only. Riders may coast straight across Main Street and may not turn into it. Other downtown hills banned. Second Street cross-street hill usable anytime. curfew bells ring at 8:30 and 9:00 as warnings.
At the PTA meeting the main vote urged the city to install a permanent front entrance walk to First Street. A committee led by Mrs. Norman Rustad Miss Vera Kelly and Miss Irene Runstad will contact the Council. Discussions touched kindergarten Domestic Science curriculum changes and a Christmas basket plan with Ladies' Aid. They discussed a proposed three year Alaska residency requirement for trapping licenses, seeking to curb illegal fur and game shipments and improve public information on trapping and hunting in the Territory.
A federal loan unit was established under the Federal Home Loan Bank Board to grant a charter for a savings association. The new financing unit will serve the organization with chairman a. the association leader named.

Matanuska colonists in Palmer Alaska cast a 135 to 4 vote approving the colony as a success in response to Senator Thomas of Oklahoma who had warned the project would fail when federal aid ended. Bowens and three others dissented, while agriculture agent Flakne called the dissenters joking and prosperous. Senator Thomas questioned why farmers would oppose and noted many northbound colonists returned.
