Commissioner Orders Autopsy In Sugata Death In Jail
U S Commissioner Dale Hirt ordered an autopsy and inquest into the death of Gichichi Sugata who died in the city jail late Monday. Dr R C Smith ruled the autopsy pointed to a coronary thrombosis in the right ventricle and a coroner s jury found death by suffocation due to a blood clot in the heart. Jury members listed were A Heimdahl Vernon Heimdahl Ralph Young Ted Hasbrouck Barney Peterson and James A Johnson.

Alaska Deer Survey Finds Yearlings Dominate Harvest
A 1954 hunting season study on Mitkof Kupreanof Kuiv Islands and nearby mainland shows 207 deer jaws analyzed. Yearlings and two year olds make up 61 percent, with age groups four and five rare, suggesting a six to seven year lifespan. Estimated total deer take 275 to 325, modest rise from last year, plus 10 or 11 goats and three moose reported. Fish and Wildlife thanks Petersburg hunters for cooperation. Captain Racthor Smith Presides Over Sugata Funeral
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Salvation Army Chapel for Gihichi Sugata 65 who died Monday night December 6. Born February 5, 1889 in Japan he came to the United States in 1909 and Alaska in 1924 living in Wrangell before WW II. Interned in New Mexico during the war he returned in 1947 and worked at the PAF cannery and Alaska Glacier Seafood cannery. Interment followed at Petersburg Cemetery with no known surviving relatives in this country.

Fire kills five children in Pt Barrow house blaze
Five children from three Eskimo families died when a wooden frame home at Pt Barrow burned after a stove explosion during oil stove refilling. The fire spread rapidly as rescuers reached the scene.
Deficit in Hospital Building Fund Reported at City Council
Councilman Willmer Oines announced a $5,000 deficit in the hospital building fund at a council meeting attended by all members, the mayor, and the city clerk. The council pressed for payment of more than $30,000 in old hospital bills while work on the new hospital continued and three weeks remained for plumbing.
