In cold weather many let faucets run to prevent freezing but this lowers water pressure and risks fires and health issues. A seven pound pressure drop by Wednesday endangered firefighting and school operations. Residents are urged to keep taps off to protect the water system and public safety.
June Kite Berkley died at Petersburg General Hospital at 11 50 on Tuesday December 7. Born June 17, 1927 in Petersburg she spent her life in the community and was a Petersburg High graduate. She married Benjamin Berkley in 1944 and had a son and daughter. the son preceded her in death. Survived by husband Roseanne Anne Jeanette Richard and her parents Tom xito. Funeral arrangements pending Mr Berkley’s arrival from the south.
Elder Lee returned home last Friday and resumed duties in the Fills and Coastal airlines office after two weeks away spent with his parents in East Stanwood Washington and with Mrs. Lees parents in Sumner Washington. Highlights of the vacation included football and hockey games. Mrs. Lee remained south with relatives and will return around December 16.
W. T. Brown of Tyee notified the Coast Guard of a missing boat named North Light. The craft departed Petersburg last Saturday December 4 with Mrs. Brown and two other passengers including Mr. and Mrs. Paul Strongren from Tyee. All beaches from Tyee to Petersburg were searched for the vessel and its three aboard.
Corky Dawson, a boy nicknamed Danny, survived a near suffocation on the Margie D barge after heavy smoke filled the LCT at Petersburg Cold Storage dock. Firefighters and Corky’s father, George Dawson, credited artificial respiration with saving his life as Mrs. Dawson thanks volunteers and helpers while the boat heads to Juneau and Sitka.
Officials from the Alaska Telephone Engineering Co with headquarters in Fairbanks show their automatic telephone system in the Arctic Hotel lobby seeking the city franchise. William Maxey a Bell veteran explains operation and answers questions. The firm cites existing systems in Wrangell Nena Nenana Homer Seldovia and promises a gratis fire alarm linked to a dialing number if awarded the franchise. They plan bond of 60000 and estimate project cost 90000 with Jack Boulet and Bert Proctor among officials.
Baranof Alaska and Sealaska steamers resume regular runs to Southeast Alaska from Seattle. Baranof and Alaska sail biweekly, Denali every three weeks until February inspection. Ships visit Wrangell Petersburg Haines Skagway Sitka and Kodiak Island, with new agents assigned at several ports.
Tommy Rustad suffers a fractured leg from a hit and run in Seattle last week. The driver halted for an infant then fled, remaining unknown. Rustad is hospitalized at Seattle Marine Hospital undergoing treatment.
At a well attended American Legion Auxiliary meeting it was decided the annual Christmas party will be held Monday December 29 at 6 o clock in the Sons of Norway Hall. A potluck supper gifts for the kiddies a program and Santa Claus will be provided.
Chris Olson, an elderly resident, slipped on a slippery street Wednesday night and was taken to the hospital by Chief of Police James Rhodes. His hip fracture is described as severe and he now faces grave illness after contracting pneumonia.
Dr Esther Herrell arrives this week to join her husband in their Petersburg medical practice, migrating from Henderson Kentucky.
Harold D. Torget, a Wrangell resident, died by suffocation when a skippy stove fire on his boat 31B272 trapped him at the city float. Firemen found him near the door in an escape attempt. Coroner said no inquest needed. Torget’s wife and parents in Seattle are listed as relatives. Previous boat owners were Arland Breese and W. Trayner, now in the states.
Seattle report shows McGovern & McGovern valuing the 1948 Alaska salmon pack at 96,212,850 dollars, the territory’s largest ever. The pack totals 3,931,000 cases with higher prices boosting value. about 75 percent of the run reportedly sold. Details list red sockeye 1,633,921 cases worth 43,298,906.50, pink 1,295,992 cases 30,455,812, chum 736,798 cases 15,842,157, mid reds 210,921 cases 5,273,025, and ings 53,758 cases 1,343,950.
Wrangell residents completed a month long drive to lift Bishop Rowe General Hospital from debt. The effort raised 4248 dollars 33 cents with a final surplus of 255 dollars 36 cents. Father H Hall praised broad cooperation and noted volunteers like Charlie Salder funded corsages for the Elks dance benefiting the drive.
Mrs. Lloyd Swanson flew south Thursday after learning her father Nels Holm died in Snohomish Washington. Holm had been ill for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Roundtree returned to Petersburg from Seattle aboard Pan American Airways. Mrs. Roundtree had been receiving medical treatment at Virginia Mason for weeks and is reported to be steadily improving. In Seattle Melvin met local residents including Mrs. Arthur Myren and Ole Sjorsen.
Almost every local organization joined the Alaska Crippled Children's carnival last Saturday evening at the hall. A varied program including bingo fish ponds side shows and moving pictures entertained the crowd and offered Christmas gifts. Mrs Ohmer reports over 1100 deposited in the bank with expenses pending. Last year’s receipts were about 500.
The 2nd annual carnival by the Alaska Crippled Children's Association thanked Petersburg residents and volunteers for their generous donations and hours of work. Every dollar raised doubles in support for Sitka General Hospital, with plans announced for a larger 1949 event.
Mrs. Olson arrived home this week finishing a Norway visit with four sisters and parents in northern Norway. She traveled from New York on the Stavangerfjord, eight days to Bergen, says the Atlantic was a mill pond on the way out. She notes scarce city goods, rationed meat, and favorable dollar exchange rates with one dollar yielding about 4.97 crowns.
Mrs. Eva Lang announces a card party for the Daughters of Norway and friends at the Sons of Norway hall tomorrow at 8 p.m. Whist pinochle and bridge are on the program with Pete Lero and Roger Wikan as committee. Oscar Sandvik is food chairman. A dance follows with music by Bennie Favre and local talent. members and friends are invited.
W H Fairis comes back to Petersburg and recovers from burns suffered in a boat fire. He plans to repair his boat and may head to Sitka where an employment offer awaits him.
Five members of the Town Council and Mayor Vevelstad met in the City Council Chambers to discuss the sales tax resolution and the first official reading of the new airplane dock ordinance. Several projects were reported including a tentative $5000 heating plant for the school and gymnasium, harbor master hire at $265 monthly, a watch house near Ohmer's dock, gymnasium rewiring, and progress on the garbage dump. Curfew for under 16 and under 18 was debated, sirens and a hospital living quarters request were discussed, and a 50 ft extension request by Taylor-Dahl Fish Co. was noted.
