Petersburg business leader Knut Thompson dies at 78
Knut Thompson longtime Petersburg businessman and civic leader died Tuesday morning after a brief illness. born March 27 1889 in Langvik Hollen i Sogne Norway he immigrated to the United States in 1907 and moved to Petersburg in 1911. He bought fish for 39 years and bought 78 million pounds of fish. He served as mayor and on the hospital board. He is survived by wife Ann two daughters June Nage Ruth Schwartz and son Tom plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was active in the Lutheran Church Rotary Chamber of Commerce Masons and Eastern Star. Funeral services were held.

State seeks delay of VHF rule for Alaskan waters
Juneau reports the state asks the Federal Communications Commission to suspend the Jan 1 deadline requiring VHF radios aboard vessels. Alaska cites rugged coastline and cost, noting AM radio remains in use and VHF installation may hamper safety communications. The petition urges phased upgrade to single sideband then VHF, with nine coast stations planned by 1973 and Alaska’s shoreline vastly exceeding the lower 48.

City Mgr John Bowers reports the Petersburg Christmas tree in the Hammer and Wikan lot will be lit at 4 p m on December 11. Third and fourth graders at Petersburg Elementary write essays on What Christmas Means To Me. top essayist will read and flip the switch. Santa will visit at City Hall then join children at the Trading Union. High School Choir will lead a community carol sing after the event. Interment was at Petersburg Memorial Cemetery.

PFI Begins New Building for Petersburg Fisheries
Robert Thorstenson of Petersburg Fisheries Inc reports a PFI crew led by Wally Swanson has started a 40 by 80 foot three story warehouse on the fill north of the cannery. The $25 000 metal sheet structure will store skiff gear nets and nets on the upper floors and provide power access on the ground floor. The facility aims to separate gear from the main cannery to prevent fire damage and ease access, with completion expected next season and a small dock to be installed nearby.
