The city council authorized an engineering firm to prepare a preliminary estimate for opening Park Street addition and to draft a grant application to federal funds under accelerated public works. N W Haner of Portland will also map the grant plan and assess costs for sale readiness.
The Chamber of Commerce elected six new directors at the Monday night meeting. John Enge was named chair of the annual installation dinner but later resigned. his vacancy to be filled by appointment. New directors include Ernie Haugen E R Pierce L M Williams Jr Knut Thompson K L Dotts and John Enge. A Christmas decoration contest committee was formed.
A Southeastern District Democratic Committee meeting in Juneau chose Miriar J. Ray Ready of Katohikan for the Central Committee and Frances Crane for the district post. Members were urged to attend a merit in the dugout Thursday at 8 p.m with Joy Briones arriving from Juneau. local adjutant Dick Klito announced plans and a social hour followed.
Petersburg High School hosts Sitka High School in the season opener. Sitka players include Rod Reed Mickey Adams Bill Gavin Mike Snowden Irving Hallman Alan Davis Tom Karpstein Peter Thielke Ron sie LeVine and Milton Ward with manager Jeffrey Dunlap and coach Don Smith.
Captain Lloyd Bayers of the vessel Watres reported a possible heart attack while 30 miles north of Petersburg. The 65 foot craft, with Dr D A Coon and rescue crew aboard, brought Bayers and passengers to town near Beacon Point. Weather delayed air transport to Juneau and Ketchikan crews were stood down.
The report records variable weekend cloudiness with gusty winds up to 30 to 45 knots and temperatures from 15 to 34 degrees. It notes week total precipitation of 2.88 inches and 4.5 inches of snowfall, and compares November weather to 1961 with far less snow and lower rainfall this year.
Amy Skeek pleaded guilty before Deputy Magistrate Ver non Counter to a charge of public intoxication and was fined 25 dollars. Police issued several traffic tickets this week. Six defendants appeared in magistrate court and paid 2.50 fines for overtime parking: James Briggs, Aril Mathisen, Art Roswold, Barbara Burrell, Billie Taylor, and Lyle Roundtree.
The senior class thanks all who loaned properties and helped the play succeed. Special appreciation goes to Mrs. Dorothea Taylor for directing the play and to Mike and Clyde Tennison for participating.
City commissioner announces all city league games will start at 7 60 p m instead of 7 30 p m Intermission will be observed so everyone can be home by 10 00 p m
Police Chief Lee Arrington announces that the noisy hospital area and rising traffic prevent using the previous sled site. A new sled lot is designated at the top of the CAA hill, closed to traffic and lit for night use, with warnings to keep kids on the hill and off the main street.
Moose outscored J&H 66 to 40 in a fast paced city league game as Itchy Hansen led Moose with 22 points and Jerry Hestad added 21. JV's beat Hicks 38 to 16 with Roger Pederson and Sig Mathisen starring for the winners.
Elders Clyde Price and Howard Park announced Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints services in Petersburg. Sunday school starts at 10 30, with a fireside chat at 7 30 in the Arrington home. Der R C Smith may speak at the lay evening meeting. Public invited. The pair arrived Friday for several months to establish a congregation. Price previously worked in Petersburg.
Postmaster Richard Brennan warns mailers that only items dispatched by Thursday the 13th will likely reach the last steamship connection to the South before Christmas. Coastal air planes will carry outbound mail from Ketchikan on Friday the 14th. The post office plans special hours on the 12th and a Saturday schedule until Christmas.
Women of the Moose welcomed five new members Betty Mansfield Jan Wikan Marie Ellis Elsie Buttle and Edell Newman sponsored by local chapter patrons Ruth Bacon Layla Wikan Barbara Jaussaud Virginia Johnson and Zella Greinier heads Christmas party planning with crafts and fundraising for a teen pool project at Moose Hall.
R. J. Ingle urged the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce to back legislation requiring six months of Alaska residency prior to applying for a resident commercial fishing license. He says nonresidents living elsewhere compete with bonafide Alaskan fishermen and notes Oregon’s law as a model. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reportedly supports the proposal.
Petersburg Chamber of Commerce invites residents and businesses in Scow Bay and Sandy Beach to join a Christmas decoration contest. Three classes cover homes outdoor displays, businesses and churches outdoor displays, and store windows with anonymous judges and prizes announced after judging.
The high school chorus directed by Joe McAlister will present Christmas music and carols at the PTA meeting on December 12 in the high school auditorium. A panel discusses the proposed teenage club with teens, teachers, parents, and city representatives. Second grade mothers run the kitchen under chairwoman Mrs. Louis Severson Jr.
Funeral services for Lee Alden Campbell, 838, were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ketchikan Mortuary Chapel. Campbell drowned near Marion Island close to Douglas where his fishing vessel had been found anchored last week. His body was recovered from the water.
Alaska Legislative Council invites applications for 1963 session staff roles starting January 28 for about two months. Positions range from chief clerk and secretary to sergeant at arms machine operators doormen messengers historian general clerks technical proofreaders and stenotypists totaling about 40 workers. Interested skilled individuals may apply for this engaging state legislative staff experience.
Erling Nicholson appointed manager of the Trading Union store effective December 1. A Petersburg resident since birth, Nicholson joined T-U in 1946 after wartime service and a brief stint with Petersburg Air Service. Knut Thompson announced the appointment.
Petersburg High School music department with community church choirs presents a Christmas program in the school auditorium on Tuesday December 18 at 8 p m. Joe McAlister leads the event featuring PHS chorus and chorale, community carols, readings from the Christmas story and selections from The Messiah. A free will offering funds travel to a Juneau music festival.
Potluck event at Tagaban Building this Sunday with meals priced at 1.00 per plate and 0.50 for children. All are welcome to attend.
