Shae ST Aba we TN asks local residents to contribute to lighting two more classrooms via City Clerk Jim Taylor's office. Funds may also come from selling Petersburg cookbooks featuring black and white artwork and recipes from local artists, coordinated by Mrs Hank Grindrod with several outlets handling sales.
Dorothy Israelson and Mabel Faber announce Dora Maes Shoppe will open next Wednesday December 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. The new dress shop will offer women’s apparel with cash and layaway plans.
Council votes 4 to 2 to renew most liquor licenses for 1952 while approving a change to closing hours that clubs and lodges must remain closed from 2 a.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday. The VFW Club license is disapproved. A Social Security agreement with Alaska is authorized. A harbor shelter project and gravel taking at Sandy Beach are approved. A rock crusher purchase is discussed but not decided.
A immunization clinic will be held on Wednesday December 12 at 1 p.m. in the Health Center.
The blood typing drive organized this week reports strong public response with daily turnout. Dr. Russell C. Smith schedules for names starting Q through Z on Saturday afternoon, with makeups offered, and all typed individuals will receive their blood type within two to three weeks.
Mrs James Leckley was elected worthy matron for the coming year and Vernon Counter as worthy patron. Other officers include Mrs Leonard Martens associate matron Joe Johnson associate patron Mrs Vernon Counter secretary Mrs Worrest Fryer treasurer Mrs Oscar Sandvik conductress Mrs John Johannesson associate conductress Ralph Hall trustee. Installation date not yet set. Christmas party with pot luck supper and Santa Claus for children to be held December 19. Mrs Ralph Hall presided.
Past Presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary met last Thursday at the Recreation. They planned to contribute toward Christmas gifts for children at Mt Edgecumbe tuberculosis sanatorium and a committee including Mesdames Ed Locken Andy Wikan and Ernie Sarff purchased the gifts that afternoon. The luncheon featured a centerpiece and decorations arranged by Mrs Locken.
Carroll Clausen, mayor of Petersburg, was chosen by local Democrats last Friday to serve as the Petersburg precinct delegate at the Democratic convention in Sitka on December 13. The caucus, chaired by Adolph Mathiesen, was held in the Council Chambers.
Week long weather report shows high 37 on December 2 and low 24 on December 6 with 1.66 inches of precipitation and 14.5 inches of season snowfall. A 55 mph south wind is reported with potential increases, and meilleure wind currently moderates. Historical comparison cites 1950 values: high 41 on December 6, low 4 on December 4, 1.44 inches precipitation, no snowfall.

Petersburg chapter of the Isaac Walton League will meet on Monday December 10 at 8 p.m. in the Elks clubroom. The main item is to prepare recommendations on game and trapping regulations for the Alaska Game Commission. Dr Russell C Smith will discuss his gun collection and display pieces. Members are urged to attend with a friend.

The Marine Firemen's union may accept an employers’ proposal not yet public to avoid a tiedup rate for West Coast non-military ships. MFU members rejected signing sailing articles until higher base pay, jeopardizing 12 San Francisco Bay ships and three Seattle-bound vessels in Puget Sound. Union president Vincent J. Malone cites a favored nation clause requiring PMA to reopen contracts if wage gains occur for any unlicensed seamen’s union before December 30, 1951.
The town council approved the appointment of Marvin Kvernvik and E. L. Faber to the Petersburg school board to meet a new Territorial law requiring a five member board.
In England and the United States three veterans recount the Pearl Harbor attack ten years later. Lt Kermit A. Tyler, then watch officer at Wheeler Field Hawaii, recalls the radar warning and surprise. Pvt Joseph L. Lockard and Pvt George E. Elliott now work in a railroad yard and a Bell Telephone office respectively, each recalling a day that changed their lives.
Office of Price Stabilization officials Stanley Friese and John Mansay will be in Petersburg on December 13 and 14 to assist merchants and explain regulations. They will stay at the Arctic Hotel and may meet with clothing merchants to gather input for tailored Alaska rules.
Petersburg Vessel Owners Association leaders Harold Hellen and Helde Petterson hosted sailors from Prince Rupert and Ketchikan to prepare recommendations for the International Fisheries Commission annual session in Seattle next month. Juneau members may join weather permitting.
Garden Club members meet at Mrs Dick Miller's home to assemble ornamental items for sale at the ACCA carnival. The club booth will offer plants, White Elephant containers, and vases. Donations of plants or containers can be arranged with Mrs Oscar Sandvik or delivered to the Sons of Norway hall Saturday evening before the carnival at 7 p.m.
Mrs Audrey Stanko will teach an oil paint class and a textile painting session this evening. Demonstrations of oil and watercolor techniques will be shown. Materials order for both classes has begun and anyone interested may attend. Membership in the sponsoring organization is not required to take part.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce announces Old Santa will visit Petersburg this year weather permitting. Children may enter a letter writing contest with direct mail to Santa Claus at North Pole. Letters due December 18. Santa plans to arrive December 23 at 2 p.m. with Quin tin DeBoer by Alaska Coastal plane and greet families at Petersburg hospital grounds. Prizes awarded for best letters and a mother orchid gift is planned for accompanying moms.
Allied jets hunted Communist Mig 15s in storm clouds as Red air power stayed near bases in Manchuria. Fifth Air Force logged 103 missions through 6 p.m. and weather limited activity. Five probing attacks south west of Kumsong tested UN lines, four repelled and a fifth unit withdrew as fronts remained quiet.
The Luther League will gather at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church for games and entertainment preceding a potluck supper. A dev il program and business session are also on the agenda for attendees.
The Forest Service offers the 20 minute film Tongass Timber Land on Southeast Alaska forests to the public for two weeks. It is currently shown at the local school and organizers may contact the Forest Service office for screening information.
