Dr W H Chase health officer ordered schools closed after the superintendent reported one in five pupils absent with flu and another fifth in class with colds. Children were barred from public places and about 150 pupils affected. The illness recenty claimed a three months old baby, with many adults reported ill, though officials termed the danger not serious.
At the last Monday meeting the Council approved renewal of liquor licenses for I. M. Dahl Willie B. Johnson J. A. Nelson and James Brennan. A $150 Chamber of Commerce grant was approved to help with treasury deficits. A Mayor appointed committee will outline a municipal building program including a hospital kindergarten home economics building water system improvements firehouse library city clerk office and more. The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department offered $1000 upfront for a new fire rack and new lighting fixtures were approved for two schoolhouse rooms. A community Christmas tree was authorized and caretakers of the new chlorinator are Police Department members. Andrew Johnson noted the winter float system and urged a new float, likely to be undertaken next spring.
The Tondeleyo, floating cannery for studying the Alaska King Crab, has been in Petersburg for days under Captain Arthur V. Nelson. The vessel with Dorothy and Afognak has operated near the Aleutians since September and heads to Seattle for re outfitting before returning to the North Pacific and Bering Sea after the new year. It also serves as a weather station for the U S Weather Bureau with recording instruments aboard, and about 40 people including scientists crab catchers and crew are aboard.
Ray Trudeau and Tondeleyo were cited for drunken and disorderly behavior yesterday. The charge lists Implied disorderly conduct with a fine of $10 and a related token in a bakery.
The Roosevelt proclamation fixes January 22 as Alaska registration day from 7 AM to 9 PM for citizens and aliens aged 21 to 35 within the territory. Hecker said Japanese vessels take crab and salmon in Alaskan waters, threaten American producers, and that Japanese have surveyed the coastline and camped ashore beyond the three mile limit.
San Francisco December 6 AP reports a heavy fog trapping 300 of the nation s worst criminals at Alcatraz Island. Warden James Johnson and guards keep convicts in cells amid fears of escapes or violence after recent convict killings. Rufus McCain was killed earlier by Henri Young. Laundry workers strike over workload last Wednesday.
The United States Tariff Commission announced a postponement of the public hearing in Washington D C from December 11 1940 to January 8 1941. The Seattle hearing occurred as scheduled on December 4 1940.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks held a semi monthly meeting to initiate seven new members in the General Pershing Class. Names: Frank Dawson Tom Dawson Justin Lind Gordon Reid John A Reid George Gullafson Robert Summers. Also planned a Christmas party for Petersburg children funded by lodge funds with a December 14 dance and prizes for the best two waltz teams from The Men’s Shop and Wheeler Drug Company.
