The Petersburg Chamber announces an outdoor Christmas decorations contest with three classifications and 15 10 5 dollar prizes. Mrs Ed Locken chairs the committee and judges are appointed by the contest committee.
Thompson ships 70 000 pounds of sable and salmon to Iceland with 60 000 more. Susitna cargo 53 tons. Tanana due next. City council meets to authorize lumber purchase for boat stalls with owners agreeing to work for rental credits. Crews seek piling logs for small finger floats as storage rooms roof rises. Jack Longworth represents Petersburg fleet at Seattle fishery hearing. Dave Ohmer meets Wrangell shrimp canners. FWS game men and Ralph Hall visit Wrangell on Harlequin to attend Stikine Sportsmen dinner with Petersburg participants expected.
Gastineau Stamp Club in Juneau began accepting orders for special envelopes cancelable with the first day of issue of Alaska’s statehood airmail stamp. President C R Couzin said orders for blank envelopes or full first day covers, featuring an Alaska flag over a white state outline on gold, are available. The stamp will be issued at the Juneau post office on the day President Eisenhower proclaims Alaska’s admission, expected January 1.
City council postponed opening applications for light plant superintendent to Dec. 8 to allow more candidates from the local employment office. Other actions include approving a Spite fence ordinance second reading, delaying Fire Code passage pending copies, library aid of 250 dollars, and project lists for the year.
A. P. E technician M. J. Bauke will restore the local phone system in Petersburg and stay on site until normal service resumes. The assurance came after talks with the new management, as the city council police committee covers fire patrol during the outage. Irving Clark Jr., president of the new ownership group, promises to send improvement plans within days.
The Alaskan Arts and Crafts Inc announces its 15th Annual Exhibit to run March 12 to 15 in Trinity Hall Juneau. Original works only no copies or kit-sets. Artists from across Alaska expected to participate during the legislative session. A bulletin with details will be released later.
Wayne Peterson 11 son of Mr and Mrs Walter Peterson won the Trading Union Deer Derby with a 118 pound five pointer taken on a hunting trip with his father. Father Walt reported returning his scope due to fogging while Wayne plans to hunt for years.
The Civic Improvement Council proposed a zoning committee, naming 26 candidates and inviting further nominations at the next council meeting. The panel will draft a zoning plan with public hearings, using Juneau Anchorage and Wrangell codes as references, for council consideration.
Libbys led by Libby McNeill and Libby won all four games on Wednesday to take first place in the Petersburg Elks Bowling League. Parr's Bakery was second, Rainiers third, and School Teachers fourth with the rest of the standings listed. High games went to Ben Smith 248, Justin Lind 224, Steve Laposki 211, Johnny Johnson 210. Rainier Keglers set a new three game series record 2484 and hold the season high team game 981. Jack Longworth still holds the high three game individual series at 579. Mort Fryer and Jack DeZordo earned American Bowling Congress awards for notable feats this season.
Elks Exalted Ruler Justin announced Petersburg lodge sent about 150 animal hides to aid hospitalized veterans. Alaska lodges collect deer and other hides. leading Knight Dave Westerberg oversees Petersburg’s shipment of moose goat and raw hides in 150. Lodge Brothers Gordon and Ron Parr donated barrels for packing and shipping. Local hunters cooperated by turning in hides.
Mr and Mrs Henry Dahl learned this week that their son in law Trygve Strom died in a Seattle hospital last Sunday He had lived in the area for many years before World War II and is mourned by relatives and friends in the community.
Phil Ciausen and Chee Han Son won top prizes in the 1958 Hammer and Wikan Deer Derby. Clausen took the largest buck at 158 pounds and Hanson had the best antlers with 110 1 8 points. Hanson received a White Stag sleeping bag and Clausen a Bushnell 6X30 binoculars. Don Ryan earned second antlers and Larry Heiner second buck. both received Case knives.
Justin Lind announces an Elks Memorial Service Sunday at 2:00 PM in the Elks Hall with Fr. Albert Sayers as orator. Officers are asked to arrive by 1:40 PM.
Christmas seals have been mailed and James G. Taylor, chairman, urges townspeople to send contributions promptly. An oversight left return envelopes addressed to the wrong person, but funds should still be forwarded to the national headquarters via Taylor.
The Peters burg High School Viking Band will hold a fundraiser concert in the high school auditorium. Tickets are at the door for those without reservations. Dennis Lund will be soloist on cornet playing A Trumpeter's Lullaby. The program includes works by Kohler Verall Hoverson Mozart Budka and Fillmore with a trumpet trio and a New Colonial March. The band aims to attend the Southeastern Alaska Music Festival in Mt Edgecumbe in late March and will perform two more concerts later to raise funds.
The Lutheran Ladies Aid will hold its annual Christmas meeting next Tuesday December 9 at 1 PM. A luncheon precedes the program and officers will be installed including Mrs Royal Duval president and Mrs Erling Nicholson vice president. All interested women are invited and asked to bring a guest.
Petersburg Chamber of Commerce elected six new board members John Enge Ed Locken Ernie Haugen Dave Ohmer Ralph Hall and Knut Thompson with outgoing president L M Williams to join the board. The group will name the 1959 president who takes office Jan 1. The meeting included fisheries proposals from Dave Ohmer and a talk by Marjorie Lewis head of Mt Edgecumbe natives nursing program noting enrollment needs and program details.
The air search in Alaska ended when two planes were recalled by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The amphibian carrying Rhode and two others vanished August 20 in the Brooks Range north of Fairbanks. Maj. Gen. Armstrong had led the pursuit with as many as 20 planes from various agencies.
