Charity Box will close for winter after next Saturday December 6 to benefit the new hospital. For two months the store, stocked by townspeople, has operated Fridays and Saturdays to raise funds. Sponsored by the Hospital Guild, the final sale runs 1 to 5 pm with bargains on pocket books furniture toys dishes and more.
Den Mother Mrs. Arne Trones notes a Monday pack party with moms and cubs enjoying Abbott and Costello films, a spelling bee, and the welcome of Clifford Lloyd and Gerry Swafford as new cub scouts. Wildlife Agent Doyle Disney announces a shifted trapping season in Southeast Alaska. The season opens five days later than usual on Saturday December 20 and runs to January 24, 1953. Mink and other furbearers have no limit. martens are restricted to Southeast Alaska excluding Chichagof Island. beaver opens April 15 to May 15 with a 10 animal limit.
Scotty Adams district deputy of the B P O Elks will arrive Tuesday December 9 for a special meeting and initiation on the evening of December 10 at Petersburg lodge preparations are under way for the visit and entertainment of the official guest.
Petersburg organizers plan a town wide Christmas party for every child on December 23 at the Coliseum with a film, tree lighting, and Santa gifts. Bud Clemons coordinates the tree. Boy Scouts decorate. final prep meeting set for December 15.
General Eisenhower spent three days inspecting U S forces near the Korean front and met with President Syngman Rhee. He said he opposes attacking Red China and warned against widening the conflict. He flew on to the United States after a guarded Far East tour.
Members and friends of the Lutheran Ladies Aid are reminded that the December meeting is held a week earlier to avoid Christmas rush. A luncheon meeting will be held Tuesday at one o clock in the church basement with Mrs Wick and Mrs Strand hosting. Guests are always welcome.
Acting Governor Burke Riley reports Alaska Freight Lines Incorporated advised the Governor’s office it would serve Southeastern ports if cargo is available. Each sailing needs 700 to 1,000 tons. itinerary undetermined pending service materialization. Shippers may contact Alaska Freight Lines at 415 Walker Street, Seattle.
Greta Menzel, lyric soprano, impressed a crowd in the high school auditorium during the Music Trail concert, with Thom as Mayer as accompanist. Highlights included Italian arias, Grieg numbers, Puccini and Tschaikowsky interpretations, plus Viennese and English selections, ending with two encores to conclude another fine evening.
Seattle waterfront employers file suit to halt picketing in the longshore foremen dispute tied up the port for 26 days. Hearing set for 9 a.m. Monday. Unions named include the AFL International Longshoremen's Association and the Independent Ship and Dock Foremen's Union.
The week saw a high of 40 on December 2 and 3 with a low of 27 on November 30. Precipitation totaled 1.41 inches and three inches of snow fell, about one inch remaining. Last year the high reached 40 on November 28, low 26 on December 2, precipitation 1.98 inches, and six inches of snow on the ground.
