Japan Envoys Present Government Reply to State Department

Washington dispatch reports Japanese envoys Nomura and Kurusu delivered their government’s reply to President Roosevelt’s query on troop concentrations near French Indochina. No reply publicized. British Make Gains On Libyan Front

British headquarters reported Axis troops attacked Alduda in three waves with heavy casualties in the first two and slight Axis gains in the third. Imperial forces countered and reclaimed most lost ground while Axis losses remained heavy. New Zealand troops push along the Egyptian Libyan frontier routing remnants of German and Italian columns fleeing westward.

The 6000 ton Australian cruiser Sydney reportedly destroyed the 9400 ton German raider Steirmark off Australia near the Cocos Islands. Survivors from Steirmark tell of the fight. Sydney and 645 of her crew are presumed lost with no date given for the engagement.
