Dae 4 in Juneau Alaska reports William Lott dead from injuries sustained in the recent avalanche. He is the fifteenth victim of the disaster bringing the death toll to that number.
The Liberty of Seattle, in Petersburg without skipper Ben Corneliason, left clothes and a gun on Kelp Bay shore after he reportedly swam for a drifting skiff. Harold Engdahl and H. Benjamin reported the loss to Customs, search continued as water runs deep and cold with no sign of Corneliason. The 44 year old Seattle resident was a member of Ketchikan Lodge 158 and Scottish Rite, survived by a wife and dog.
Old-time Petersburg resident Hans Zahl was found dead Sunday morning by John Kolstrand and Chris Wick. He likely died Friday, surviving by a nephew Harold Haugen who arrived this week. Funeral services were held at the Sons of Norway Hall with burial in Petersburg cemetery.
Washington officials report that 4635 applicants for government jobs last year had criminal records. The finding came after the Bureau of Investigation compared Civil Service fingerprints with Justice Department files.
Thirteen men were initiated into Petersburg Bills' Club and Wrangell Lodge No. 1595 B P O E on Saturday. Wrangell residents arrived with about forty Elks and spouses. local initiates include Kenneth Stensland and others. Dr Eu gene Wheeler planned to join but was in Kake for dental work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Visiting Elks included Exalted Ruler James Nolan and Mayor Frank Barnes. Luncheon preceded the ceremony and Wrangell guests departed Sunday morning.
A. Cawthon, manager of the Coliseum Theater in Petersburg, announces the yearly fundraising drive for the Pioneers Home in Sitka will run through next week. The drive supports Territory residents and the project, endorsed by Alaska Film Exchange, seeks equal distribution and community support.
Hal Kimmel reports Eric Larson's boat wrecked in a Monday night storm near Fanshaw. Larson arrived Gambier Bay a week earlier and, blocked by bad weather, remained several days before attempting salvage. Kimmel and Larsen swam to shore. they walked five miles to Fanshaw in cold, rough seas.
A Saturday night storm in Petersburg produced strong wind from the southeast, then southwest, with hail and heavy rain. It caused power outages in parts of town, toppled light poles, broke wires, and damaged fences while leaving the Blind Slough plant's power uninterrupted. several hundred trees were felled and minor property damage reported along Mitkof Highway and Beach Road. Electric service was restored the next day and local water drainage operated well.
Linfield College conservatory of music hosted a piano solo recital by Sylvie Noreide daughter of Mr and Mrs Anton Noreide of Petersburg. The freshman played Salut d Amour by Elgar.
After a week extension, 133 ballots were counted at the Chamber of Commerce meeting. 82 favored the game refuge, 51 opposed. A recount confirmed results, and the plan will be sent to the Alaska Game Commission. The Petersburg fur farm resolution was sent to the industries committee, and Gov. Troy endorsed it for the upcoming Territorial Legislative session.
