Following a photo of Wisconsin pulp mill workers receiving pay, letters warn pulp mills could threaten Alaska’s fishing industry. Wildlife agents Sarber and Disney report five wolves found dead at two sets in Kasheets Bay and Duncan Canols head. Evidence suggests others fed on bait and died farther away. The Rt. Rev. William J. Gordon arrived in Petersburg from Wrangell for a visit with the Petersburg Episcopal Mission. He pledged to seek national support if local fundraising reaches a goal to build a parish hall and church, and conducted confirmations for Marilyn Meeks and Philip Jerauld.
Aunt Jennie O Brine conducts special services at the Assembly of God church enjoyed by attendees. She will travel to Wrangell for a service tonight and then to Ketchikan to lead a revival at Rev Wesley Hansen's church. In Petersburg she stayed with Rev and Mrs C O Hirschy.
The Rotary Club noon meeting honored Arness for his estate presented park land. The site near Three Mile includes a swimming hole and adjacent recreation area proposed to Astary Clubs sponsor. Captain George Lloyd screened the film Walking With God.
Important meeting scheduled for 2 p m Sunday in Council Chambers to elect delegates from Petersburg vessel owners association and the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union. Representatives from Prince Rupert Ket chikan Petersburg and Juneau will attend to discuss proposals for the coming season and select delegates for a December convention in Juneau and a January Seattle meeting.
Fedrelandet Lodge No. 23 of the Sons of Norway holds an initiation at the lodge hall at 8 o clock. Organizer Mrs Leah V Carlsen has prepared a class and a program with refreshments after. Candidates should arrive by 8 30. Sam Idem, president, aids in the initiatory work assisted by Mrs Carlsen. The organizer departs tomorrow for Ketchikan then Seattle to resume lodge duties.
Petersburg residents can have pie or cake for dessert tomorrow after dinner at the Sons of Norway hall starting 7 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Alaska Crippled Children’s Association with parish groups, games, a fish pond, and prize draws. Enjoyable carnival fun supports a worthy cause.
A Women’s Christian Temperance Union meeting is scheduled for Friday afternoon December 8 at 2:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. C. O. Hirschy.
Senate leader Lucas said coalition against statehood measures blocks vote as civil rights opposition fuel. President Truman urged statehood citing propaganda, while Dixie Democrats fear Alaska and Hawaii align with civil rights supporters. Hoey urged unity and opposed admitting noncontiguous areas, noting Alaskans largely favor territorial status due to taxes.
Two Petersburg oldtimers died in Washington recently. Pete Somers, uncle of Erling Strand, passed away at Port Townsend where he lived with his widow. The Somers spent years in Petersburg and once occupied the Strands’ former home. Bob Campbell, longtime Seattle resident since leaving Alaska, also died leaving his widow. The Campbells ran a fog ranch on Castle Island and Campbell was known for tending the Narrows lights.
Norma and Bill Wilder take over the Main Street magazine record and gift shop from Marguerite Bidwell and rename it Norma's. Norma runs the shop while Bill remains involved with the Petersburg Press. Hours are 12 to 5 30 and 7 to 9 30 p.m.
Eastern Star announces a Wednesday December 6 meeting to finalize plans for the annual Chapter Christmas party, with the event scheduled for December 20.
A mid December date is set for the Alaska Music Trail second concert at the Coliseum Theatre. Two featured artists will be Desire Ligeti a bass baritone of international fame and Marcus Gordon a renowned American pianist. Gordon studied at the San Francisco Conservatory and Juilliard, served four years in the Army Air Corps, and recorded Robert Schumann pieces. Ligeti trained at the Royal Hungarian Conservatory, performed in Budapest and Berlin, headed Manila’s voice department, appeared with major opera companies, and made his American debut in 1946 in San Francisco.
Notice urges the public to drop gifts for Sitka Hospital by tomorrow night. It mentions associated groups and venues like the Arctic Hotel and local clubs, urging support for crippled children and related care efforts.
Regular Health Council session discussed civilian defense and first aid for massive burns. Public health nurse Annette Jacobson reported about glasses needs for 23 children and noted several no longer required after doctor examination. Organizers planned to contact the Parent-Teacher Association for help and set the next meeting for January 12, 1951.
American Legion Auxiliary reports 348 of 466 local respondents support universal military training with 85 opposed and 33 undecided. Early nationwide poll from 121,434 in 512 communities shows broad support for UMT with 11,230 against and 14,583 undecided as the effort continues into Congress. Local organizers include Mrs. Tom Thompson and volunteers across 13,565 communities.
In Juneau the regular January term jurors have been drawn. Grand jury convenes at 10 am January 3 and petite jury at 10 am January 8. Petersburg residents named for grand jury include Mrs. May Lyons and others. Petit jury selections list several continuing residents and a few misplaced names.
Square dance enthusiasts will enjoy dancing after the Alaska Crippled Children's Carnival tomorrow night along with ballroom dancing. A baby boy was born on Thanksgiving Day to Mrs. Ray Semberg, residing at 112 Seventh Avenue, Seattle.
Petersburg Wildlife Association chapter of the Isaac Walton League received its charter at a 100-strong Elks Club gathering. Leonard Hopkins presented the history and officers were re-elected: Hs ea Sarber president, Erling Strand vice president, Bill Lund secretary-measurer. A wolf control funding shift and Ohio Sportsmen affiliation were discussed.
Petersburg Jaycees meet to organize Christmas baskets for needy families. They will host a Sunday movie where admission is canned goods. A democracy program with high school students is considered, and Dart board concession progress for the A.C.C.A. carnival is reported.
Weather records reveal Petersburg fails to match Alaska's banana belt with a 34 degree high on November 26 and a 9 degree low on November 29. Bethel Nome and Point Barrow posted higher readings as 14 inches of snow cover Petersburg since late November.
