The Packer Eagle, wrecked on rocks at Exchange Inland last Thursday, reached the Taku area Tuesday with extensive hull damage. Clyde Sheldon, owner, evacuated to port with Coast Guard aid and arranged patching over the weekend while pumps kept the vessel afloat until she went offline.
Governor Walter J Hickel appeared in Petersburg Monday afternoon meeting with the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Harold Lee Jr presiding. Cabinet members Harold Strandberg and Augies Reetz joined the visit along with city officials and local businessmen.

In District 2 Petersburg Wrangell Rake and Port Alexander Ernie Haugen led the Republican slate with a decisive showing over John Longworth while Gravel Gruening Rasmuson Stevens Begich Pollock Rader Veach Wright Bradshaw Massey Haugen and Longworth led their races with about a two to one margin on propositions.
Ronald Kettleson a North Dakota college senior paid a 100 fine and 25 replacement cost after pleading guilty to willful destruction of property in Wrangell Alaska. District Judge Thomas Payne suspended a six month sentence and ordered payment after a break-in at Patricia Norheim’s home. Police found him hiding in a bedroom closet after a break in reported at 4 am Sunday during a Rainbow Girls assembly trip. He was jailed briefly then released following payment.
D W Shultz reminded students from grades 1 to 12 that classes begin Tuesday September 3. Kindergarten begins Wednesday September 4 with the same start time and attendance expectations set by the district.
Early results show Ernest Gruening trailing Mike Gravel with 351 of 415 precincts reporting. Gravel 14 013 and Gruening 12 536, with absentee ballots possibly swinging the race. Ted Stevens leads the GOP primary for Senate and Howard Pollock runs unopposed in the House race.
