Alaska extends purse seine period to August 26
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced extended purse seine operations through 6:00 p.m. Friday, August 26 in multiple districts, with some areas reopening on a seven day schedule and others closing by August 24. Drift gill net districts will close for the week, then reopen at 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 26.

League Leaders Recognized in Little League Banquet
The season ended with a Wednesday banquet at the Lutheran Church basement honoring players and officials. A baby boy named James Dennis was born Tuesday August 23 to City Police Chief and Mrs Miike Olsen at Petersburg General Hospital weighing seven pounds. Irg and Mrs John Wilts of Rake welcomed son Dan James born Friday August 19 weighing seven pounds nine ounces at the same hospital.

Roe Taken By First Japanese Ship To Stop Here
The first Japanese freighter to land at Petersburg, the M. S. Sumyoshi Maru, berthed over the weekend and early this week, loading 200000 pounds of salmon roe. This marked Petersburg’s first port call by a Japanese fishing vessel, per the U S Bureau of Customs. Pictures of the loading operation appear elsewhere in this Press.
