Petersburg voters will hear the tentative budget for the new fiscal year at the August 16 council meeting. The mill rate remains 15 with details to appear next week. Council discussed taxing boats at full value and delaying an ordinance until a new attorney is hired.
The council approved a fall jail proposal referendum 6 to 1 with Trones dissenting over an 8 000 versus 76 000 amount. It authorized selling two F street lots to John C. Kaer and buying the Max Haube property for 5 500 near the light department site. A resolution gave status to a local action committee under the economics opportunity act as crews fight fires and monitor waters during a dry period. Weather warns continued heat and fire risk as district rangers report multiple fires in SE Alaska.
D L McKernan of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries told a Senate subcommittee that 55 to 60 million sockeye entered Bristol Bay with about 25 million caught. He called the 1965 run the biggest measured with any accuracy and estimated nearly six million Bristol Bay origin salmon were caught on the high seas this year. He noted signs the Japanese fleet with gillnets fished for larger fish.
Hammer & Wikan Deer Derby managers Jim Hammer and T. F. Smith display the year's leading antlers and deer from the local contest. Marvin Peterson's antlers measure 110 1/8 points and Smith's 106 6/8 points, both also winning statewide awards. The ongoing derby offers prizes for largest deer and largest antlers. entrants must register with Hammer.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces a weekly purse seine opening from 6 am Sunday, August 8 to 6 pm Wednesday, August 11 across multiple districts with various closed water relaxations and shortened periods in others. Gill net districts 6A and B stay at a four day week. Seine fishing shows slight gains with fish present in Sumner Strait and varied boat averages across districts. Escapement in district 10 improves but remains insufficient for a fishery. gillnetting remains strong in Prince of Wales district.
Forest Service District Ranger Dean Weeden reports vandalism at public camping areas including Petersburg Creek and Ohmer Creek Campground. Active damage observed to signs, a cabin roof, garbage cans, and a fireplace. Glass from beer bottles creates a hazard. officials urge reports of suspects or additional damage. A 1300 foot plank walk to Blind River rapids was completed and a 14 foot aluminum skiff added at Swan Lake for fishermen.
