Two of five Biggs Field airmen were injured when their car skidded on wet pavement, rolled at least three times, about five miles east of Tularosa at 3 15 p m Monday. Injured are Keith Johnson and Elwood Sharp. Riders Ralph Waldo Orebaugh, Stanley Shimkus, and Tom Panalone. Sheriff Wayne McCommis investigated.
Principal Raymond L. Westfall reports grade school enrollment surpassed 1300. He thanks parents for cooperation as students were moved between buildings to balance the load.

The Lions Club of Alamo Gordo denies false accusations that they advocate moving public school students elsewhere. President Charles Binder says the club is non political and non sectarian and would not engage in actions against neighboring community students.
Lions leaders from southern New Mexico met in Las Cruces for orientation and a district reorganization discussion. Dan King of Tularosa presided. 11 of 18 clubs were represented. Attendees from the area included N Fribley, R Hobson, and Charles Binder.
The body of Francine Lois Yrabarra an 11 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Yrabarra of Mescalero was shipped to Fort Cobb Oklahoma Monday night for burial in the Comanche cemetery there. She died Sunday in the Mescalero hospital and would have turned one year old on September 25.
State and city officials discussed an urban highway through Alamogordo with a 120 foot right of way on most blocks and 80 feet on ten blocks. The project would include wide pavement drainage and sidewalks where applicable, with costs borne by state and federal funds under urban allotment.
Dove season in New Mexico opened at noon September 1 and runs until October 12 with a daily limit of 10. Local agent Mrs. Tom Charlees notes other bird seasons are pending federal regulations and dates have not yet been announced.
The New Mexico School for the Blind resumes classes Monday morning with 85 to 90 pupils. Dr. N. P. Quimby, superintendent, announces teaching staff include Clara Miller Edwin Hamilton Edwina Rickle Ruby Brown and others. New on staff are James J. Bogan of Oneida New York and Mary Schuster of Madison South Carolina. Governesses and a secretary to Dr Quimby are named among the personnel.
Walter E. Taylor of the New Mexico State Employment Service reports that Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Gallup, and Hobbs are among areas where construction employment has not peaked. Despite material shortages delaying some jobs, overall employment remains high with acute shortages for clerks typists stenographers civil and electrical engineers nurses and dietitians. Unskilled labor demand grows in the north.
Dr. E P Simms announced Miss Nina Opperman resumes her county nurse and health officer duties this week. She had been on a year’s leave studying at Wayne University and served about seven years in the role. Mrs Erula Herrington filled the post during the absence and left last week for El Paso.
Savannah Campbell was released on a $105 bond after a Saturday DUI arrest. She caused three minor accidents near the Rocket Lounge, forcing other drivers off the road, prompting responses from city patrolmen Markley and Coogler and county sheriff Wayne McCommis.
A large group of Alamogordo students plan to resume college studies or start higher education this fall. New Mexico A&M leads in local enrollments with Billy Dunn and others while several attend UNM Albuquerque, ENMU Portales, NMWC Silver City, Highlands Las Vegas and many pursue colleges across the nation including Stanford, Columbia, Texas Tech, and SMU.
A five member city commission will take office September 14 to serve Alamo Gordo until February 1951. Elected were Alvino Duran James W Telles Walter S Mullins John C Rolland and Paul H Stone with a total of 790 votes cast across districts.
The oiling of the new Highway 33 construction from Mountain Park to Cloudcroft will likely be bid on September 22. W J Keller of the Santa Fe Public Roads Administration said the fall award would place a prime coat to preserve current surfacing until spring when 1.5 to 2 inch oil mat can be laid.
By unanimous vote the Town Board named Ger ald BE Hanson, 1621 Indiana, to the Zoning Commission to fill the unexpired term of George Abbott whose resignation was effective September 1. Mayor Chappell noted a second vacancy from Mrs E C Bartletts departure and will await Alamogordo Womens club nomination to replace her. Hanson will join a commission that will elect its own chairman.
Members of the New Mexico Petroleum Industries committee meet for their first annual fall conference on Tuesday September 12 in Ruidoso. Fred Linn secretary announces a top oil company executive will speak on what lies ahead for the oil industry. A national Oil Industry Information committee rep will discuss week program plans and an outdoor barbecue will close the meeting.

A minor crash at the old La Luz turnoff Monday at 2 30 p m left Mrs. John J Thomond of Dayton Ohio with a cut above the eye. Sheriff Wayne McCommis and State Patrolman Robert Badagher reported that Thomond drove north and collided with Zeke Martinez Sanchez of La Luz who turned left onto the turnoff. No other injuries were reported among the Sanchez car occupants.
Membership drives for the Alamogordo Community Concerts reach mid level as Mrs. Sanguinet announces a limit to fill the auditorium. Organizers array volunteers, stress transferable passes, and cite wide NM city participation from Santa Fe to Las Cruces.
Funeral services for Emma Blazer Thompson 82 died in Champion Memorial hospital early Sunday were held in El Paso at 2 pm. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. She resided at Mescalero since 1938 with Blazer's Mill interest, moved from El Paso after her husband Dr Howard J Thompson died. Survived by three nieces and four nephews, donations to cancer fund requested.
The Rev. Oscar Hill of Alamogordo was elected state treasurer for the New Mexico Association of Spanish Baptists at the annual convention held September 1 to 3 in Alamogordo. Other officers named include AndRES Viera Roswell president Celso Villarreal Belen vice president and Julian Reyna Tucumcari secretary. Delegates from across the state attended sessions at the First Baptist Church in Alamogordo with Rev M. Lopez of Santa Fe presiding. The event featured a women's missionary union meeting and a Friday sermon by Rev T J Gamble Jr. A KALG radio broadcast included a sermon by Hill and musical numbers by Mileita Ortega Las Vegas and Sarah Vidaurri, with Roswell selected to host next year’s gathering.
A Church of Christ congregation builds a new church at the corner of 16th Street and Hawaii Avenue, due for completion by October 1 with first services soon after. Construction costs are estimated at 5000 to 6000 dollars. Maupin oversees, with services planned at 11 45 a m and 7 30 p m on Sundays and at least one midweek service. The group, formerly meeting at 1409 Indiana Ave, differs on Sunday School practice from other congregations in the denomination.
New Mexico will start with a 95 enlistment quota for the first increment of the Army Reserve. Selection favors members with fewer dependents and younger ages, with 19 to 25 prioritized before older applicants. Quotas for subsequent increments are 194 and 127, with first and third by branch and second by MOS codes. Reservists must cover own travel to exams but may be reimbursed.
Charles Evans about 55 died yesterday at Mescalero hospital after illness. Funeral held at St. Joseph's Catholic Mission in Mescalero Tuesday afternoon. He is survived by three children living with relatives in Alamogordo, Virginia Evans in El Paso, Gibson Evans firefighting, plus his mother and two brothers in Mescalero. His wife was killed in Alamogordo six years ago.
