Special to the Alamogordo News reports that President William McKinley was shot by an anarchist. The incident triggers a national crisis as medical teams treat the wounded leader and officials rally public response. No further details available in the excerpt.
President McKinley was shot at 3 30 pm at the Pan-American grounds in Buffalo by an anarchist. He was wounded twice in the abdomen and transported to a hospital where doctors say he will recover. The attacker, identified as Fred Nieman of Polish nationality, was seized within minutes.
Santa Rosa, chosen as the Rock Island and El Paso Northeastern junction, sees constant construction and new enterprises. Water works, power facilities, and a rail-linked future boost optimism, while a rival town emerges ten miles away and the Liberal to El Paso line nears operation.
A long list of visitors and locals frequent the Pass City this week. Postmaster Ed Hoonan and many merchants, engineers, and family members travel between Nogal Alamogordo El Paso Capitan Cloudcroft Kerrville and Capitan area for business and visits.
Five men were shot and one seriously wounded in a saloon brawl at mile post 192 on the El Paso and Northeastern extension last Friday morning. Joe Hoffman, the dealer, was stabbed by Franco Lindo who drew a seven inch dirk, while others drew knives. Hoffman fired, wounding Lindo in the legs and arm. a man named Charles Lewis was shot in the left hip. Hoffman was badly cut and not expected to live. Deputies moved Lewis, Lindo, and two others to Alamogordo for hospital care. President Eddy permitted humane hospital transfer.
In Justice Phillips court three cases were on the docket. James R. Nolan faced a defrauding charge by W. B. Bracken over a $19.75 board bill and was fined $25 plus $9 in costs. Jesus Rodriguez was arrested on a battery complaint by J. A. Gonzales and was discharged after the evidence tallied. Cicilio Guteruz, charged with assault with a deadly weapon on Ricardo Lazo, was to stand trial this morning.

He returns at 2 a.m. with the basket, blaming his wife for the late arrival in a moral that ends with the line Usually the Woman is to Blame.
El Paso and Northeastern official H Alexander toured San Antonio to set up a larger Cloudcroft Route exhibit for the third International Fair. The booth in the north end will feature balsam pine decor, four arch entrances, 800 electric lights, fans, benches and chairs, and views and literature about Cloudcroft.
