E C Prehm launches a new store named Prehm's Bargain House next to the Lincoln State Bank in Carrizozo. He returned from El Paso after meetings with traveling salesmen and purchases to stock the shop. The store aims to serve Lincoln county residents with Christmas selections.
Mrs. Mary Ellen Pender known as Grandma Pender died at her son’s home in Hatch New Mexico on Monday morning November 16 at age 71. Born near Atlanta Georgia she lived in this region over 20 years and ran a Cloudcroft eating house famed for hospitality. She moved to the Rio Grande valley circa 1917 to live with a son and is survived by seven children four sons and three daughters.
Joseph R Logan died suddenly of heart failure in Kelleyville Oklahoma about a month ago. He came to this area from New Mexico in an ox cart over 45 years ago and lived here most of the time. Relatives found him peacefully passed away during the night, and friends remember him for his genial nature.
Washington November 21 Internal Revenue Commissioner Blair said federal income tax receipts for 1924 rose by more than 25 million dollars. Total 689,124,185 with 1,298,481 returns filed and average net income of 4,425.55 yielding an average tax of 94.42. Corporations taxed at 12 percent though separate. No rise in million dollar incomes, 74 reported.
Roswell New Mexico November 22 Fifty million cubic feet of unidentified gas erupts from the Irving test southeast of Lake Arthur in section 8 16 27 trapping the drill and blowing equipment aside. The well pours sand rock and gravel for two days then releases sand gravel and water. Crew cannot resume drilling as the cavity pressure keeps blasting debris miles away amassing a broad field scare. Observers call the event a possible closed structure indicating a range from gas to oil gusher while awaiting explanation.
A Rio Grande Farmer I report notes New Mexico’s tax delinquency totaling 6.35 million dollars for 1915 to 1924, with Socorro San Miguel Bernalillo and Dona Ana counties the largest holdouts. It urges a legislative commission to audit and enforce collection without discounts.

Ownership of the El Paso Times changed last Friday as H D Slater owner of the El Paso Herald purchased all the stock of the Times. Slater will direct and publish both dailies while J Wilmarth becomes temporary head of Times business management. The Times, founded in 1881, has driven El Paso’s growth, and recent competition ends with the sale.
Roswell New Mexico November 28 A quarantine by the secretary of Agriculture takes effect midnight November 22 against all Chaves and Eddy county cotton. No cotton from either county may be shipped without vacuum fumigation. Most of the cotton from these counties has already shipped. Remaining cotton in Pecos rally must be shipped to Pecos Texas for fumigation or await local plant operation.
The Ways and Means Committee approved a non partisan measure to cut the federal tax burden by about 336 million dollars annually. The bill would relieve more than a million taxpayers and especially reduce income taxes by roughly 193.5 million dollars next year. The measure heads to the House on opening day December 7 with hopes for early Senate action and enactment by March 1.
El Paso Texas November 23 C E Crowson and wife are recovering from injuries after an old shrapnel shell dropped near Fort Bliss exploded during target practice They were picnicking near a dead cactus when the shell detonated A three inch gash was cut in Crowson's head and Mrs Crowson suffered cuts to an eye and an arm Army officers estimate the shell may be three years old A detail from Fort Bliss was sent to search for unexploded munitions
Washington reports a year long trial of the administration’s prohibition plan. An organized enforcement system will be tested until September with Walton A. Green directing a new statistical office to monitor results. If the year yields a negative verdict, Congress may be asked to fund stronger measures or to modify the law.

The state Commissioner of Public Lands announces a December 7 1925 meeting in Roswell New Mexico to discuss leasing rules for oil and gas lands. Officials seek input to amend or set policies amid royalties totaling about 24000 monthly, mainly from the Artesia field.
The G E Farm Book from electrical experts advises lamp wattages for farm use. Horse barn or cowstable should have 25 watt Mazda lamps spaced behind stalls or no more than twelve feet apart. Hayloft needs 100 watt Mazda. Silo and granary require 75 or 100 watt with a 25 watt near the chute. Dairy garage or shop use 75 or 100 watt. infrequent use allows 21 watt. Out-buildings and sheds require 25 watt lamps.
New York reports live tissue from a chicken heart, prepared by Dr. Alexis Carrell, growing under Rockefeller Institute care. Officials warn that without daily trimming it could explode into a citywide monster as the tissue doubles every 24 hours. Motion pictures document the rapid growth and the tissue is said to be immortal while nourished.
