Cloudcroft’s new dial telephone office, a $50 000 investment, will begin operation Tuesday June 3 at noon. E Shelton, manager of Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph, said local service will start with the new exchange serving Cloudcroft and surrounding areas. Long distance and operator services will continue from Alamogordo.

Gran Quivira tour draws 100 plus travelers
Over 100 Alamogordo residents and neighbors joined a Chamber of Commerce sponsored tour to Gran Quivera National Monument on May 25. Las Cruces El Paso and other nearby towns contributed out of town groups. Next tour to Dog Canyon on June 15 includes a horseback ride and chuck wagon dinner with a $10 horse rental fee. Reservations by June 10 through the Chamber office.

Community Mourns Mrs A L Dunn After Sudden Heart Death
Mrs. A L Dunn 59, longtime Alamogordo resident and city office clerk, died of a coronary clot at her home after a Saturday visit to friends. Funeral services were held Monday at Mullins O'Dell Funeral Home with a Sixteenth Street Church of Christ service, attended by many relatives and friends from Alamogordo and beyond. Survivors include her husband former Senator A L Dunn and two sons Aubrey and Bill, plus multiple brothers, sisters, and nieces. Dunn served in community groups including Church of Christ, Eastern Star, Chamber of Commerce, and the NM School for Blind board.

Alamogordo and Holloman Air Force Base may receive Bonito Lake water someday. City officials discussed feasibility of a cooperative project with S P Railroad to convey Bonito and Eagle Creek waters from Bonito and Nogal Lakes to Alamogordo and the base for domestic use. Railroad engineers seek an independent water supply for villages north of Carrizozo, while Air Force officials showed definite interest pending a cost survey and purchase terms. Estimated supply: two million gallons daily.

Alamo Couple Awarded Degrees at Highlands University
Terry and Mary Grissette of Alamogordo earned degrees at Highlands University Las Vegas New Mexico during the May 22 commencement. Both veterans and art majors, Terry received a Master of Arts and Mary a Bachelor of Arts. Terry has researched pottery glazes and discovered a new glaze named Alexandrite, which shifts from soft green by day to rosy under artificial light, under the guidance of Dr John Dietrich.

Judge Lawson Succumbs After Severe Stroke
James Lee Lawson 79 one of Otero County's earliest residents died at his home after a three day illness from a stroke. A West Virginia native and University of Virginia graduate, he helped shape New Mexico's constitution and served as Third Judicial District judge. Survived by two daughters, funeral set for Mullins O Dell with Governor Mechem among pallbearers.

Summer Recreation Program At Alamo Gordo School
The Alamo Gordo Public School begins a summer program with gym activities swimming lessons and sports for boys and girls. Roller skating classes planned pending skate delivery with sessions 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Junior to senior band activities run June 16 to July 18 with Friday concerts. Walter Ray of Tul arosa and Dale Scott of Alamogordo issued a May 26 call for precinct meetings on June 7 to elect two year precinct chairs and 75 precinct delegates. The county convention on June 14 will select 15 delegates to the state convention in Albuquerque on June 26 and then national delegates in Chicago on July 21. A county central committee meeting will follow to choose a county chairman and secretary for the next two years. Ray plans to seek re election if opposed. Judge E T Hensley Jr of the Ninth Judicial District showed limited patience in a short district court session in Portales. Five Year Old Hit by Truck in Park View Courts
The five year old son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Page was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being struck by a delivery truck from Alamo Lumber Company on Twelfth Street at Pennsylvania Avenue. The child played at the curb when he darted in front of the vehicle. Injuries were not serious, with X rays to check for a possible shoulder fracture. The father works at Holloman Air Force Base.

Cat Scotts House of Flowers will occupy a new location in the Hamilton and Stevenson Building just north of the post office on Monday, June 2. Final Awards Assembly Honors Dozens At AHS
Alamogordo high school held an awards assembly on May 23 presenting more than 100 scholastic athletic and other prizes. Five cash scholarships of 25 dollars were awarded by local clubs for excellence in business literature art music and home economics. Top scholars included Gordon Binder Martha Oliver Pablo Luevano Oliver Lee Victoria Sanchez and Patricia Ann Lee. Perfect attendance certificates went to 23 students led by Rudy Hernandez with five years.
