State Highway Commission will award contracts on June 6 for the final paving project on Highway 70 across the Mescalero Reservation. The 18 mile route includes base course and two coats of asphalt oil. A re oiling project between Otero County line and Hondo is also pending.
Senator A. L. Dunn and J. R. Nelson of Tularosa appointed by Gov. John E. Miles to lead local efforts. They will survey areas and build a skeleton organization ready for rapid action in case of an aerial invasion. Robt. E. Holzer of Albuquerque coordinates statewide efforts through the State Council of National Defense.
O M Lee, in poor health for weeks and suffering heart attacks, was taken to the hospital Saturday. His children were at his bedside Sunday, including Mrs Mona Kinnison from Fort Brown Texas. He is reported somewhat better today.
Claude Danley and his son Eugene were shocked when lightning struck a fence during a rainstorm while guiding horses near the ranch northwest of here. Eugene recovered quickly. Claude remained unconscious for hours and was brought to his daughter Mrs. Chester Selby’s home for treatment. He suffers severe nerve pain in his limbs.
L A Hoket and Bill Veck began a 100 acre cotton experiment 18 miles south of town on the Veck homestead. They plant Pima cotton in contour rows with two tractors and horse drawn cultivators. They aim to raise 10 acres of good cotton if moisture allows and plan grain planting on Hoket’s east Walmet farm.
Will Rogers Jr. 29 eldest son of the late humorist and Collier Connell 29 a Beverly Hills and New York society girl were wed Monday in Justice of the Peace B Mahlon Brown’s office in Las Vegas. Mrs. Rogers is the niece of Dr Karl Connell New York surgeon. Her parents are dead. She was born in Tularosa New Mexico and studied at El Paso private schools Smith College and Stanford University.
Boy Scout Troop No. 127 plans to open Celarwater Natatorium if local demand supports it. They propose a $300 summer lease, season tickets at $5 for adults and $2.50 for children, daily swim until cleaning day, lifeguards from among scouts, free instruction via Red Cross, and weekly swimming and diving contests.
Pasadena College men's quartet will lead a service at the Church of the Nazrene on June 1 at 7 30 pm. They will sing several numbers and speak briefly. Public invited.
Local hiker Mr James A Tatum recalls a petrified forest between Alamogordo and the foothills marked by silicified wood. He warns tourists could steal relics but suggests a small park for visitors as a potential Chamber of Commerce project. He has collected a pound of wood pieces cut into bracelet, brooch, and ring shapes for his daughter.
White Sands continues to attract visitors as high school groups from multiple states travel to Alamogordo. Officials from the National Park Service discuss future development with custodian Johnwill Faris while attendance through the year runs 46 percent higher than last year.
A group of Alamogordo models who assisted Burton Holmes at White Sands received autographer books detailing the Travelogue life story and Holmes association. Holmes calls the White Sands pictures excellent and Huff credits the films as outstanding. Irma Egbert was summoned to Socorro for a state welfare workers conference and returned.
Jack Lee has returned home after graduating from the A. and M. College at State College. He expects to depart soon for San Diego to engage in aviation work as part of the defense program.
Mrs W N Turner travels to Los Angeles to visit her son William Turner and family for several weeks. Mr Turner continues to El Paso for a week with daughter Mrs Mary Ida Sammons and family.
Relatives and friends of Mr and Mrs Jack Mitchell of Morenci announce the birth of a daughter Norma Frances born May 25.
Mrs Bud Brown formerly Teddy Lee Ward visited from Carlsbad for the weekend and attended the high school commencement where her brother Arthur Ward Jr was among the graduates.
Cecil Brown and his young son visited his parents Mr and Mrs Geo Brown in town over the weekend.
Mrs. Geo Brown and two sons George Jr and Malcolm moved to their Marcia area home for the summer. Mr and Mrs Roy Hall and their two sons joined Mrs Brown. Mrs Sanford and two children visited her parents Mr and Mrs Carl E Haynes from Bayard NM over the weekend.
Mrs. John Kelt formerly Louise Ward visited last week to see her father Arthur Ward and family and to attend her brother Arthur Ward's senior graduation. She left Sunday night with her sister Jeanie Ward who will stay in Tucumcari for a time.
Mr and Mrs Warren Rees visited last weekend from Zuni New Mexico where Mr Rees runs a store. Dr and Mrs F B Evans left for Elephant Butte on Wednesday for a short outing.
Alamogordo teachers depart after the school year ends. Staff members head to Lincoln New Mexico Boulder Colorado Greeley Willspoint Texas Belden Nebraska Mexico City El Paso Indiana Harvard Roswell Cloudcroft Canyon Texas and other locations for summer study libraries and family visits.
N. B. Sisk and his family have moved from Mercedes Texas to Alamogordo where he will serve as a post office clerk. His two sons are in high school and have been playing in the Mercedes band, clarinet section.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Dale hosted a large young crowd at a dinner dance for Frances Nell Dale turning 16. Seated for 16 girls and escorts joined later for dancing with entertainment at the Dale home. Earlier, about 25 youths visited Misses Mary and Jeanie Agnew at their ranch above La Luz for swimming and dancing.
Mrs G H Grant hosts a small afternoon reception honoring Mrs Henry Miller before she relocates to El Paso. A few intimate friends attend as she prepares to start a new home away from town.
A closing Commence ment feature was a dancing party by the senior class at the Woman's Club building after Friday's commencement exercises. On Wednesday, seniors hosted a picnic supper for juniors at White Sands with about 125 attendees.
Tuesday evening the Band Parents' Association hosted a dancing party at the pavilion for band members and their friends.
A social event hosted by Mrs. Jay Lockett celebrated her daughter Miss Kay's 15th birthday with a "Come as You Are" theme. Seventy guests attended at the Woman's Club building, with prizes for the balloon dance won by Jackie Alexander and James Rees and chaperones assisting throughout.
The Church of Christ congregation honored the George Taylor family with a picnic at White Sands this week and hosted a party at the Taylor home on Thursday before their departure to Texas for the summer. The event had the nature of a handkerchief shower.
Mr and Mrs John Kowiak entertained a group of friends with an all steak fry at the White Sands on Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Billie Lafferty hosted a four table bridge gathering on Wednesday evening. Miss Mildred Swaggart and Miss Audrey Nell Rees won the afternoon honors for the club session.

Calvin H. Agnew of Alamogordo completes his first year at the New Mexico Military Institute Junior College and expects to return home for the summer. Frank G. Carr Jr. of Alamogordo earns a high school certificate after a year in the Senior Cavalry Unit of the ROTC with 24 New Mexico graduates among 123 total.
Memorial Day observance will close local stores from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday May 30. The Chamber of Commerce reports no regular program. Wilbur Pharris of the American Legion says members will decorate graves of deceased ex service members during the two hours.

Linwood Frye son of Mrs W V Frye who studied engineering in Kansas City returned home Friday with his bride Miss Jaqueline Eckert of Kansas City They were married May 11 in Olathe Kansas The couple were San Marcos Academy classmates and plan to stay in Alamogordo for a time before possibly returning to Kansas City in fall.
Miss Flora Roth wed Aud rey Butts at the home of Mr and Mrs R A French on 16th Street Sunday morning The couple were attended by Orin Cassidy and the ceremony was officiated by Rev F R Poage A wedding breakfast for eleven followed The bride taught in Otero County including La Luz and Cloudcroft and Mr Butts is a Texas Tech graduate They will spend summer in Freeport Texas then return to Cloudcroft in fall.
Paul Blazer Jr son of Mr and Mrs Paul Blazer of Mescalero and Miss Mary Esther McMurry of Mescalero were married here May 26 with Rev L C Whittle officiating.
Mrs. Henry Miller announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter Miss Maryhelen Miller to James T. Wells of Cananea Sonora Mexico. The ceremony will be held Sunday in Las Cruces with only family present. Maryhelen has been a popular Alamogordo teacher for three years after coming from Cobden Illinois. Wells works with Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. in Mexico.
The Band Parents' Association launches a town wide program for children and adults with outdoor games at the ball park six days weekly starting June 2 and indoor activities at the Pavilion. Jim Eddleman will supervise both programs assisted by WPA staff. fees fund equipment and operation. Memberships and skate rentals aim to cover costs, with the Town Board taking 15 percent of gross roller skate rents.
County school board members and officials meet with Trost & Trost in El Paso to trim Cloudcroft gymnasium building specs after the contract was awarded to Hiram Horne of Alamogordo. The new gym replaces the one that burned last year.

Harkey-Petty nuptials took place last Wednesday evening May 21 at the bride's parents home in Carrizozo. The groom Ralph Petty from Alamogordo works with Petty General Store in Carrizozo and the bride Zane Harkey is daughter of Mr and Mrs John W Harkey. He was a top Southwest golfer, 1938 champion, and they plan to settle in Carrizozo after visits in California and Arizona.
