Washington May 18 after seventy days of deliberation the senate passed the railroad rate bill by 71 to 3 with Foraker Morgan and Pettus voting no. The vote drew a large attendance and a visible sigh of relief as the measure drew unprecedented attention since 1893.
Former Senator William E. Chandler comments on the Senate passed railroad rate bill. He says it advances beyond the 1887 law but warns it could invite judicial interference with rate making and undermine the commission’s administrative work. He argues legislative fixes are needed to protect railroad rights and limit government overreach.
Washington May 21 The railroad rate bill was studied by the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce for three hours. The decision was to disagree with all Senate amendments and send the measure to conference. The committee will not seek instructions from House referees.
Washington May 22 agreement on the Statehood bill in a conference report will be reached this week. Terms likely admit Oklahoma and Indian Territory as one state at once and allow Arizona and New Mexico to vote separately on joining as a single state at a regular territorial election. The plan is known as the Foraker amendment.
M Whiteman an 85 year old Jew merchant and native of Russia died by self inflicted gunshot in his store rear bedroom Tuesday morning. He had lived in the West many years and was noted for business shrewdness. Remains embalmed by Buck and shipped to Roswell for interment after son Chas Whiteman’s arrival.
An unsigned editorial criticizes Otero county newspapers and urges local reader “Scrutinizer” to buy and run them to adopt a direct Republican viewpoint. It argues markets punish papers that try to please everyone and promises to pursue its own editorial path despite opposition.
Executive Office in Santa Fe issues a memorial day proclamation urging observance on May 30 1906. Governor Herbert J Hagerman calls for nationwide patriotic sacrifice and public observances honoring fallen soldiers and surviving veterans, with citizens urged to refrain from unnecessary labor and amusements.
A dozen or more skilled workers including carpenters brick masons and plasterers could find steady paying jobs in Santa Fe. Contractors and artisans already here are busy with ample work to be done around the city.
Roswell New Mexico May 19 Lee Bivins of Amarillo Texas bought 2000 head of steers from D F White for 50000 dollars cash. The 3 and 4 year old steers are being loaded today and will be pastured in the Panhandle.
Santa Fe May 17. The North American Copper Co capitalization 750000 and the Aurora Mines Co capitalization 500000 both of Lordsburg and the Macho Mining Co of Lake Valley capitalization 300000 were incorporated today.
A slight shock of earthquake was felt in Oakland and San Jose and other points tonight. No damage has been reported.
Santa Fe reports Governor Hagerman dismissed Pablo Medina and S R Hendren, county commissioners of Quay county, from office for accepting bribes to lower corporation tax assessments.
At a Territorial Board of Education meeting in Santa Fe on March 16 a resolution listed required branches for Second Grade and First Grade teaching certificates. Second Grade covers Reading Penmanship Orthography Grammar and composition Geography Arithmetic United States History Elementary teaching and school management. First Grade lists Reading Orthography Grammar and composition Penmanship Geography United States History Physiology Civil Government Arithmetic and Elementary Pedagogy including management theory and practice and elementary psychology. An option lists Elementary Algebra Botany Zoology Physics or Book-keeping. The board also allowed one renewal of a First Grade certificate without re examination for a six year period.
The Department of the Interior will investigate timber and coal land sales frauds in New Mexico. Special Agent E P Holcombe is stationed permanently in Santa Fe, with A Dezendorf and other land agents also stationed there. Timber land sales to Alamogordo Lumber Co American Lumber Co and Pennsylvania Development Co will likely be probed.
The Warren brothers W E and G E are described as straightforward popular citizens. Their drug store is praised as one of the neatest looking and best arranged in the southwest with a carefully managed prescription department and liberal business practices.
The Pelphrey planing mill handles finishing work for the Dawson hospital and the Dawson office building. He also employs extra men here, spreading Dawson funds through weekly payroll. Pelphrey expects continued heavy work on the Dawson contracts for months.
G. J. Wolfinger runs a trusted dry goods firm praised for reliability and honest advertising. The paper lauds his prosperous business and civic engagement in Alamogordo, noting his fearlessness in sharing opinions and commitment to local advancement.

Fire at about 11 o clock destroyed Louis Hills residence and all contents. Valuable papers and records of Mexico property were lost. Hill was away at his ranch when the family fled to a neighbor's for the night. Local belief points to incendiary arson. Loss estimate difficult. insured for 150 and 250 on contents with London and Lancashire Insurance Co. agent J. D. Clements.
