The speaker argues rapid postwar demobilization in 1945 46 harmed containment of Soviet influence and increased costs. He contends keeping a million troops in Europe and 250 000 in China would have prevented USSR expansion, kept China free, and reduced ECA expenses, noting public pressure shaped foreign and domestic policy.

Town Manager Ben F. E. Rutz announced next week’s start of piping Maruchi and Carl Ranch Springs into Alamogordo’s domestic system. He cited critical supply, 3.5 feet in reservoirs, and urged Holloman Base to reduce draws and rely on its own wells to relieve demand. The town began 24 hour pumping from Alamo Canyon and converted the pump to butane to ease transport issues.
Alamogordo residents see a precise replica of the Liberty Bell in Independence Hall as part of the 1950 Independence Day Savings Bond Drive. Bells were donated by copper makers and transported nationwide by the Liberty Bell Fleet with Ford support and Standard Oil gasoline. Otero County targets 24000 of 1657000. residents can request a bell for their town by writing the Treasury in Albuquerque.
Town begins a spraying campaign to curb fly breeding at garbage dumps cans and alleys. Town Manager Ben FE Rutz notes the use of DDT and Gy Ben and cautions crews to avoid spraying cars and buildings as they work through alleys.
Senator Dennis Chavez made a brief tour through Tularosa Alamogordo and Cloudcroft en route to Carlsbad to back his brother David Chavez Jr for governor. He framed the visit as a push for more and better roads and received praise for a U S Senate speech denouncing alleged communist influence in the state department.
Frank Stegden brother of Al fred E. Stegden former Otero county resident died in a military hospital in Livermore California. Burial was May 12 at the National cemetery San Bruno California. Survivors include brothers Joe California Willie Roswell and nephews and nieces in Lompoc Alamogordo Nucla and Alamogordo. He served in the Navy until retirement after World War I.
At the regular meeting of chapter 14 D A V members endorsed the American Legion Post 34 building project and pledged help to finish it. Leslie Paterson was elected commander and Morris Davis senior vice commander to fill vacancies from transfers. Eldridge elected chaplain. attendees included James Sanders junior vice commander A Telles adjutant Cobb Anderson service officer Manuel Lucero Michael Dunn and James Malone.
Alamogordo voters will decide on switching from a town government to a five ward commissioner system with a city manager. Election set for Friday June 9 at the Community Center, following a mayoral proclamation change to avoid June 6 conflicts. If approved, a second election within sixty days will appoint the five commissioners and city manager. Candidates must reside in and own property within the ward they seek to represent.
The city improvement committee met Tuesday at the Community Center with eleven attendees. Plans include traffic studies, stop signs, street lighting upgrades, a school lunch room, and a new or renovated SP depot, with timelines tied to truck availability.
The Otero County Wildlife Conservation Association schedules a Thursday May 25 meeting at Cloudcroft High School auditorium. Secretary James H Joy urges all sportsmen to attend and share views on state and local game matters. A State Game Department representative is expected for an informative discussion on game laws hunting conditions and proposed regulations.
Thomas B. Hyde of Fresno California is appointed sanitarian for Lincoln and Otero counties with headquarters in Alamogordo New Mexico. He will arrive around June 12 for orientation in Las Cruces under Dr. K G M Ehlers and Hiram T. Miller and begin duties July 1 at the Otero county health department in Alamogordo courthouse.
The State Highway Department will award bids on June 8 for grading draining and asphalt surfacing on 16.9 miles of State Route 24 between Cloudcroft and Denney Bridge in Cox and Penasco Canyon. Estimated cost about 252000 and funded by Otero County secondary road funds.
Cpl. Joseph Roy of Holloman Air Force Base sustained a broken back when a civilian Piper Super Cruiser crashed during landing Sunday afternoon at Alamogordo Municipal Airport. Copilot M/Sgt Le Roy E. Jones and passenger Arman Rushton, both HAFB, were aboard. Pilot Jones could not stop in time. plane struck a telephone line. Plane owner M/Sgt Henry C. Schotter. Investigating officers include State Police Captain Al Hathaway and Alamogordo officials.
The first annual southern New Mexico realtors conference will be held in Las Cruces on Saturday May 27. Attendees from Alamogordo include Irvin Menger John Dalton Roger Olyvesbee Allister Mactavish and from Cloudcroft Roger Mayfield and P B Hendricks. Hendricks is president and Mac tavish secretary of the Otero county board of realtors. The Circle Cafe hosts the conference with a 9 30 a m opening by Stanley H Mathis president of the New Mexico Association of Real Estate Boards. Morning talks feature state and national speakers. Lunch at 12 50 will be addressed by Professor George Lockwood of New Mexico A M College. At 2 00 p m Europe land values and conditions will be discussed by St John J France followed by a forum and workshop.
Boys and girls ages 4 to 16 who enroll tomorrow in the First Baptist church vacation Bible school will participate in a town parade around 11 o clock Friday morning. Preparations begin at 9 with a formation, and the school runs 8 30 to 11 30 each weekday for two weeks starting May 29.
The Rev. Melvin R. Rice has accepted the pastorate at the First Baptist Church of Tularosa. He and his wife and their 10-year-old son relocate from Mountainair New Mexico. both natives of Arkansas trained at Ouachita Baptist College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Rice served as a Reserve Corps chaplain during the war.
Miss Ruth Streeter will travel to Alliance Nebraska to visit her sister, with plans to stay for a period during the coming days.
The Alamogordo School Board reconsidered five bids for ten added classrooms to cut costs. West Construction Co. bid closest to funds after removing features, saving about 95,000 with a revised heating system and interior plaster elimination. Completion is now unlikely by September, with mid term occupancy uncertain.
The summer music program for fifth through twelfth grade students will be held at the high school from June 12 to July 14. Enrollment is about 130 in the band and 50 in orchestra, with a $2 horn rental for students using school instruments. Private lessons will be offered by Bill Rhoads and Betty Lantz, not required.
Alamogordo council debates funding a center serving enlisted men with Col Baynes proposing 4000 yearly from base revenues toward a 6000 dollar budget. The rest would come from local subscriptions as chambers clubs discuss the plan and a fund chairman may be appointed. The center has reduced military and civilian police burdens and offers a single soldiers gathering place.
Tularosa trustees discussed issuing revenue bonds to build a municipal sewer, gas, and water system extensions. The bonds would be self supporting and repaid from system revenues, with no property assessments. Negotiations included gas supply prospects in El Paso and a potential bond purchaser Boettcher Co. and Dahlberg Co. involvement.
KE P Rees announces May 28 changes to passenger train times effective 12:01 am. Eastbound trains include Imperial 18:15 formerly 11:38 am and Golden State 8:42 am formerly 8:33 am. Westbound trains Cherokee 3:50 am formerly 5:40 am and Golden State 1:55 pm formerly 11:02 pm. Reservations advised for Golden State. trains 3 and 4 on conditional stop schedule to Kansas City and Alhambra.
A remodeled Service Grocery at the corner of Eighth and New York shows a 12 foot depth extension into former living quarters adding space for an office and meat section. Harry Thomas, longtime manager since purchasing from the late Ed Huss, oversees the upgrade with new counters displays island fixtures vegetable bin dairy cases shelving asphalt tile flooring and improved lighting.
Barr Fifer, superintendent of the La Luz irrigation system in Alamogordo, will patrol Fresnal Canyon during the summer. Town Manager Ben E. Rutz says Fifer will help expedite nighttime flow into the creek toward Alamogordo, with night rights to the south and middle forks and to the north fork after July 1. Fresnal residents have domestic water rights day and night but no irrigation rights from sundown to sunup.
The 680th Air Force Band from Holloman AFB performs on the courthouse lawn this evening from 7 30 to 9 00. Chief Warrant Officer Emile De Buschere presents soloists A Sgt Chester T Pass Sgt Wilbur O Reagan and Sgt Walter C Prew. National Anthem opens. Selections include Norma Pomp and Chivalry Semper Fidelis and The Merry Widow with a ten minute intermission.
The Marine recruiting drive starts Monday May 22 under Captain T. R Cathey. Men from Southern New Mexico who enlist before June 15 will finish basic training in time for September corps schools. Eligibility requires single status between 17 and 29, plus standard physical and mental qualifications. The El Paso office is in the U S Court House Building.
