Otero County Sends 32 Men to Armed Services
The Otero County Selective Service office announced that 32 men were called last week for military duty. Navy entrusts Guadalupe J. Ortega and others from Alamogordo and nearby towns. Army duty includes William Hayhurst, Lawrence Barrett, Oscar Ortega, and additional names across Alamogordo Weed and Tulatosa areas.

Saga Of An American Soldier Rexall Malloy’s World War II journey in three theaters
Rexall Malloy and his brother joined the armed forces in 1931, but he married instead of continuing in the infantry. After 13 years of Army service including time in Manila, he reenlisted in the Air Forces. He served as a mess sergeant with the 7th Bomb Group, shipped to Hawaii before Pearl Harbor, then to Brisbane and Karachi. His tales include bracing Monsoon rains in India and a near brush with Japanese bombs in Calcutta. Now at Alamogordo Air Base he hopes to return to combat but prefers not to go back to India.

A Santa Fe Recruiting Station press release states Richard L. Dobbs a 17 year old from Alamo Gordo was accepted into the U S Navy on May 10 at the Santa Fe main recruiting station. He joined as an apprentice seaman after swearing in at the Las Cruces sub station and will be released to inactive duty for 10 days before transfer to the Naval Training Station.
