A Southern Pacific special train carrying 145 Shriners and families from Ishmalia temple Buffalo and Rajah temple Reading Pa. derailed at Honda Santa Barbara after hitting a defective switch. Thirty five killed on impact, many injured, with twenty five bodies in Santa Barbara morgues and ten in San Luis Obispo. The wreck occurred at 2 45 PM after a day of sightseeing.
May 12 in Great Falls Montana stockman A W Stanton and eight followers expect the world to end within ten days. They sold all their property for 150 and moved to the city’s highest house to await heavenly transfer.
J A Tatum, manager of the Alamogordo Lumber Company commissary, reported satisfactory improvements at the logging camp. The camp will move to a timber site soon, enabling more logs and cheaper transfers with a sectional, bolted store building. He also noted strong camp and ranch business at the store.

The old Courtney mine three miles south of Highrolls and eight miles east of La Luz was sold Monday by J. H. Brantley to eastern capitalists forming the H. J. & W. T. Copper Mining Company. H. J. Cox acts as superintendent and F. W. Hunt of Minneapolis, Ind. leads management. The site near the railroad promises easy access for substantial development and a mining boom in the Southwest is anticipated.
Former Kansas senator and New Mexico governor Edmund G. Ross died in Albuquerque after a three day illness with pneumonia. He cast the deciding vote against impeachment of President Johnson, costing him hatred in Kansas and years of poverty. He died at eight years old state later, living with his son Pitt Ross, county surveyor. Kansas officials had recently sent messages of appreciation for his vote saving the country from impeachment disgrace.

San Luis Obispo May 13 After two hours the coroner's jury returned a verdict on the Southern Pacific Honda wreck. They found deaths from burns and injuries and cited defective equipment as the cause based on witness evidence.
Brigadier General Orlando H. Wilcox retired and former governor of the national soldiers home in Washington died today in Coburg Ontario at age 85.
