Mescalerian win cups in Alamogordo High School contest
The Mescalerian literary society won the Rotary Club cup after a Friday night meet at Alamogordo High School with events in Spelling Declamation Oration Piano and Debate. Ruth Morgan and Rulah Miller led spelling, Katherine Duncan won declamation, Davenport Mechem the oration, Lucile Tweed the piano, and the debate favored Mescalerians with John Rolland and Corinne Bennett for Mescalerians against Murph Muirhead and Hilary Fisher for Alamanians.

The Land of Sometime Operetta At Central and East Schools
Pupils from Central and East school buildings present The Land of Sometime an operetta about a Doll festival in Japan. With 250 children in the cast the show features Teddy Bears as goblins and a final Uncle Sam chorus. Admission is 25 cents for a 7 30 PM performance directed by R G Herron.

Fathers' and Sons Banquet Praised as Finest Annual Event
The Fathers' and Sons' banquet at the high school hall last Thursday drew about one hundred attendees and stood out as one of the finest occasions of the year.
Banquet Honors Local Boys and School Leaders
A high school banquet featured a mixed attendance of boys and girls served by Miss Gladys Wilson and her Domestic Economics class. The high school orchestra, led by R. G. Herron, performed under adult town musicians, with Judge J. L. Lawson as toastmaster and memory for Dr. Gilbert. After-dinner speakers included W. D. Bryars and several doctors and professors. The menu listed grapefruit cocktail, baked ham, deviled eggs, potatoes, pineapple, asparagus, salad, rolls, coffee, ice cream, nut cake, and mints. Mr and Mrs J N Ogie and children visited from Mountain Park.

The county scholastic contests and track meet at Tularosa last Saturday drew many attendees from across the county. Rural schools reported full attendance with several at 100 percent. Tularosa won top honors in literary and field events, Weed placed second, Cloudcroft third. individual honors went to Weed’s Marion Sturman in high school spelling, with John Nelson second and Ima Jones third.

Supt. R R Pratt of the N M I B establishes an industrial training division at the school with Navajo rug weaving. Two additional looms ordered and wool to be bought directly from Navajo Indians. Junior and Senior Banquet at Rice Building
The Junior class hosted the faculty and Senior class at the annual banquet on Saturday night May third in the Rice building beside the Unique cafe. The room featured streamers lanterns and a May pole with pinks and sweet peas and pastel mint baskets. Funeral for George Bent Held at Baptist Church
Memorial services for George B. Bent were conducted at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Kelley. Masonic rites were given at the grave as a large turnout paid tribute to a well known, jovial man with a wide circle of friends. Bent, born May 4 1858 in Amherst Nova Scotia, died after being struck by a drunk driver in Springer April 30. He had worked on railways, mining and road construction across the Southwest and leaves a large family and a stepson.

World War Veteran Andrew J. Sadler Given Full Military Honors
Andrew Jackson Sadler, 29, World War II veteran and Associated Press operator for the El Paso Times, received full military honors at his funeral in El Paso. Fort Bliss soldiers formed the procession with band, firing squad, pallbearers, and caisson, under Chaplain J. F. Chenoweth. He served in Aisne, Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel and other sectors, earning a divisional citation for liaison under heavy artillery fire. He died from gas and war wounds, survived by his widow at 611 N. Oregon Street and his parents in Alamagordo, New Mexico.

Two Boys Taken To Hospital For Appendicitis Operations
Mr and Mrs Martindale of Mescalero Indian Agency brought their 9 year old son for an appendectomy performed last Thursday afternoon. the appendix ruptured and he was in critical condition but is improving. Mr and Mrs George Daugherty from Pinon brought their 9 year old son for surgery on Monday and he is recovering well. Mrs Vergie Turpin from near Elk New Mexico seeks medical care. she is Tom Turpin's mother from this place.
