The Alamogordo bands present a free spring concert Monday May 9 at eight o’clock with Band Instructor Gerald Maguire announcing guest director Col Glen R Johnson of the Texas College of Mines band. Johnson will lead practice sessions after school and the program features contest selections plus a combined piano vocal and band piece to Victor Herbert’s Kiss Me Again. Seniors miss the event due to Governor’s Day at Carlsbad Caverns.

Alamogordo cut its track squad to two boys for the Thursday District Meet in Las Cruces due to date conflicts. Cruz Nogales placed second in Pole Vault and Discus Throw and fourth in Javelin Throw. Marley Lafferty tied for fourth in Pole Vault. In tennis, Anderson and Moore lost 8-10, 3-6 to Anthony. Beauchamp beat Margason and Martin to reach finals. Stevenson beat two competitors to meet Beauchamp in the final, Stevenson winning 6-1, 7-5 for first place. Thursday morning Willie True will take five senior boys to the state meet in Albuquerque for track, tennis, and golf.

Death claims Robert Foster pioneer resident of the region
Robert Foster, 76, a longtime area pioneer, died last Friday after a weeklong illness from paralysis following a brain blood vessel burst while visiting a son in Hot Springs. He is survived by three sons John, Charles, Manuel, and a daughter Idella, with funeral services held at Geren & Leadinghaus chapel and burial in Mount Vista cemetery.

The Alamogordo high school and grade school bands, 138 strong, traveled to El Paso last Thursday for the Southwestern Band Contest. The grade school earned an excellent rating on stage, while the high school received good standing for the afternoon performance and excellent for the evening marching show. Judges praised junior Alamogordo efforts, though tuning issues were noted for the large high school group. Max Lane, Eugene Dale, and Gilbert Jordan earned excellent solo ratings. drum majors posted superior as a group.

White Sands Promotion Graces Chicago Rock Island Office
White Sands gains national publicity with a window display at the Rock Island railroad ticket office on Jackson Street Loop. A Town Board special meeting heard WPA engineer Dwight Allison outline an oil paving project for New York, Michigan and Indiana avenues. The plan would use 25 000 in WPA labor and about 8 000 for materials with property owners paying 65 to 70 cents per lineal foot. If property owners agree, one third of costs may be saved and no legal channels needed. assessment would be higher under district plans.
