A vivid 1898 sketch paints Alamogordo growing from a single tent to about 3000 residents with churches schools sawmills and a railroad to Cloudcroft. It extols a lofty 10000 foot ascent noting pine scented breezes blue sky and the dream of living there forever as visitors reach the high plateau.
In a Saint Marcial message dated April 22 from Socorro Captain Crawford denounces carrying deadly weapons as cowardly. He urges law abiding citizens and editors to speak forcefully against six shooters used for show, recounting a murder case tied to frontier violence and mob danger. He notes his own gun use only to protect a prisoner from mob justice.
A ten year old, David Marquez, son of A F Marquez a railroad section boss, died when a switch engine backed over him. The coroner's jury ruled the death an unavoidable accident with no criminal negligence by the train crew or railroad company.

An Illinois justice ruled that a man's wife is entitled to the money paid for eggs laid by their hens. The decision splits profits between husband and wife, with emoluments from the hens acknowledged as jointly earned.
The improvement company has planted hundreds of geraniums and other flowers in the depot park with expert help and great expense. Citizens who keep cows and stock are urged to confine them or move them to a town herd to prevent further destruction of trees and shrubs already planted.
Local incident centers on an egg with the message Prepare to meet your God found by Willie Dalton near Seven Rivers. Mrs Corn believed the note meant danger and prepared to die. Tuesday afternoon Special Officer Billy Smith arrested Phillip Martin a storekeeper at the company supply depot on grand larceny charges. A search warrant brought to light a variety of railroad company goods at his mill area and annex including a missing typewriter. Martin pleaded guilty to three charges one of obtaining money under false pretenses and two larceny counts with fines and grand jury binding over on the remaining larceny charges.
R H Pierce proposes adding a second story to his large business block to be arranged into sleeping apartments. The facility will be elaborately furnished and first class in every respect, under Pierce's supervision, meeting a long felt need in Alamogordo.
Classified short notice offers four room dwelling at a bargain with instruction to call the News office for information.
In a dialogue between a mother and father a child narrator questions why Spain would install a sixteen year old boy as king. They discuss habit and consent, compare English views on divine right, and joke about a royal marriage to an Austrian princess. The debate extends to Cuba and the cost of ruling.
Through A. S. Greig and I. M. Rhomberg Alamogordo hires Prof. Geo. F. Alexander of Grand Junction Colo as a professional bandmaster and director. He brings twenty five years of experience and previously led a 35 piece band. Officers elected include F. M. Rhomberg president and Alexander as director with Rhomberg securing him a post office position in Alamogordo.
The defense rested after Walter Savidge, 20, testified he held Childers during Heflin's death, disputing prosecution witnesses. Jurors found Childers not guilty after a crowded courtroom trial that ended Saturday night with verdicts and related court notes.
