Revival of goat and cattle industries in Otero County spurs homesteading in Pinon Valmont and Bent communities. Nearly 10000 acres taken up since year's start under the stock raising act which allows 640 acres per stockman. This week an 81 year old pioneer filed on his remaining 480 acres after first staking 160 in Pecos valley years ago.

Fickinger Re elected Superintendent of Tularosa Schools
Paul L. Fickinger was re elected Superintendent of the Tularosa Public Schools by the Municipal Board of Education. Attendance rose 32 percent from last year and the district expects another similar increase next year due to lumbering activity, with overcrowding already evident. The auditorium had been partitioned into three classrooms to address pupil numbers. If enrollment grows again, housing will become a major concern.

Frank Stone Returns to His Old Home Town

Scouts to Build Fire Tower in Lincoln Forest
Boy Scouts from eastern New Mexico plan a camp near Weed starting June 12 with a lookout tower to sight fires. The forest service cooperates on a permanent telephone line to the camp while placing firefighting equipment at stations two to three miles apart and stocking supplies for emergency lines over 10 miles of line for active fire season.

Big Power Shovel Arrives for State Highway Work
A large power shovel was delivered to the Alamogordo station to be sent to the Las Cruces highway. It will load material from a major arroyo to plate about five or six miles of the nine mile cut off toward the sands, shortening the route by about four miles. After a month west of town it will move to the La Luz High Rolls road where anticipated savings may repay its cost, with extensive blasting expected.

Death of John P Griffin in Alamogordo Passes
John P Griffin died Sunday March 26 at his home southeast of Alamogordo after a year of ill health. Born in Kentucky in 1857, he moved with his family to Alamogordo eight years ago to join his son Posey. Services were held at Geren Leadinghouse chapel and he is buried in Mount Vista Cemetery beside Posey. Surviving are a wife, two daughters Mrs Chester Cunningham of Henderson Kentucky and Mary of Los Angeles, and Wyatt of Alamogordo.

Corona Half Wiped Out By Conflagration
A large fire in Corona Lincoln county Tuesday night destroyed three buildings in the business district and caused about 25000 in damages. The blaze started from a defective flue and overwhelmed the town due to scant fire fighting equipment.
