W L Black and J W Ware toured Pinon to investigate abortion among goats. They found widespread cases in the area and collected blood samples to test for infectious disease. Some farmers blame broom weed but officials doubt its spring prominence explains all abortions.

Seven area high schools including Hatch Deming Lordsburg Alamo Gordo Las Cruces Hot Springs and Tularosa will send contestants to a district shorthand typing event at our high school next Friday. Contests begin at 9 00 for shorthand and 10 30 for typing with about forty visitors expected and invitations extended to local residents.
Santa Fe March 22 Purchasers of fishing or hunting licenses must show how much game they killed or fish caught last season State Game Warden E L Perry says recording all fish ducks doves and geese is nearly impossible but total game killed should be accurately reported He believes season totals will be revealing compared with department estimates Mrs J H Tweed Jr and her children plan to return to Alamogordo from Casper Wyoming at week’s end after wintering there.
Mrs. G. Sadler died at her Alamogordo home on March 21 after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Geren Leadinghouse Chapel and interment followed in Mount Vista cemetery. Survived by husband W. M. Sadler a son in Weed California and a daughter in Mississippi along with several grandchildren.
The Primary and Beginners Sunday School at Tularosa Methodist will host an Easter egg hunt Saturday afternoon March 30 at 3 30. They will meet at the parsonage with Miss Lena Stephens and Miss Josephine Hunter.
The Junior Board of Stewards and the Sunday evening choir of the Methodist church in Tularosa host an Easter prize box party and egg hunt on Saturday March 30 from 3 30 to 5 30 p m. All Junior Stewards and choir members receive a prize box.
Veteran Sacramento Mountain line conductor J H Tweed, nearly 70, was hit by an Alamogordo woman’s car on Thursday near Miller Buick Garage. He suffered several broken ribs and possible lung injury, was treated at home by a physician, and will be out of work for weeks.
The invitation calls all to attend the Union Easter Sunrise Prayer Meeting at the Presbyterian Church Sunday at 6 15 AM. The theme The Living Christ will be carried out in the program and the organizers promise an interesting sequence to enjoy, so be there.
Sixteen men turned out for daily practice as Tularosa forms the Tularosa Baseball Club to field a competitive team in Southern New Mexico. Officers elected include FE Barn as manager Lee Briscoe as coach Thatch Hunter as captain Alva Sitton as treasurer and Jimmie Baird as mascot. An exhibition game with Alamogordo is slated for next Sunday.
The District Governor of Rotary, Judge Jeff Atwood of the 42nd district, is in Alamogordo today visiting the Alamogordo Rotary Club. He paid an official visit to the Las Cruces club on Wednesday. The Alamogordo luncheon was rescheduled this week due to the governor’s visit.
The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association at its Roswell convention voted to continue a $250 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions of anyone stealing cattle or horses from members. The payoff has rarely been claimed, and the note highlights the financial lure of the reward over theft.
A large group of Alamogordo baseball fans journeyed to El Paso to see the Cubs versus Tigers game. Attendees include Joe Ware Dr. M A Doherty H D Walker and several couples along with Lions and their wives who joined the El Paso Lions Club luncheon at noon.

Spencer hosts a tea at the McDonald home and visitors tour the Malpais lava beds.
Protests filed with New Mexico Land Commissioner over a proposed sale of about 5000 acres in the Tularosa basin to C. Chase at $3 an acre. The New Mexico Educational Association questions selling to speculators before basin development, citing state spending on water and infrastructure to boost the land’s value. The notice, published January 11, ends March 22, with Chase as the lone bidder known.
Las Cruces report by agricultural statistician R F Hare shows corn leading all grains on New Mexico farms as of March 1 with 1 045 000 bushels. Wheat oats rye and rye production figures are 246 000 658 000 27 000 and 4 000 bushels respectively. The merchantable portion of the 1928 crop ran about 80 percent against 70 percent in 1927 and 79 percent on a 10 year average.
Santa Fe reports Gov. R Dillon of New Mexico will not join a western protest against Hoover administration oil conservation policy. He says New Mexico is satisfied with President Hoover's judgment. The governor conference may still proceed in Denver with several western governors in attendance.
H E Douglas elected by the town board to succeed Tom Jones who resigned to manage his ranch. Douglas previously held the post and has worked about six months elsewhere. His appointment earns general approval and the confidence of local businessmen.
Southern Pacific Railroad this week paid 15000 dollars toward its 1928 school tax as the second half apportioned to school purposes. The prepayment comes six weeks before penalties would apply and is praised by citizens. The El Paso and Southwestern Railroad formerly advanced taxes to aid county finances.
The Methodist church, with Easter Sunday March 1 as target, will move into the main auditorium after finishing touches. Contractor McRae led a crew on front steps this week while services continued in the basement for months. Women of the congregation contributed significant funds toward final drives.
In a Boy Scout Court of Honor session on March 26 four Scouts from the School for the Blind earned first class, two earned second, and one joined as tenderfoot. The 22 member troop now has 12 first class, 7 second class and 3 tender feet, with five totally blind. Under Scoutmaster H J Hebbern and Earl Rogers the group trains for the Roswell Jamboree on April 12 focusing on signalling Morse code first aid. The NM SB orchestra, mainly Scouts, with Director Parker, will perform at the Jamboree.
Senator O M Lee and Representative W D Bryary will leave about Sunday to attend the special session of the legislature.
Ira Tidwell was elected president of the Pinon Avis Mohair Growers association for 1929 at a recent meeting. Craig Bell was chosen secretary treasurer, with W. A. Gage J. W. Stevens and Dan Guest named to the sales committee. The spring mohair clip is underway with a record crop anticipated, and about 100000 pounds may be marketed this year. The industry contributes to Otero County's economy, yielding roughly $350000 annually for growers in the Sacramento and San Andreas mountains.
New Mexico's law restricting highway signboards faces its first test in Santa Fe. Two large signs on the Lamy road are challenged for right of way distance, as Attorney General Otero clarifies the 100 foot rule from the road edge. The Alamogordo baseball team plays a Sunday afternoon game against a Tularosa club. Admission is free and F. R. Miller returns as manager. Prospects look strong for a notably improved roster led by McDonald Gillis Gifford Lawler Carr Coombs Campbell Ware McCommis Rolland.
Mr and Mrs B H Johnson formerly of St Louis Mo have taken over the Mountainair Sanitarium property. They rename it Old Orchard Farm a rest home for tuberculars. They plan to revive the orchard landscape install a gasoline pump powered well and later add electric motor service. They will keep poultry and cows and offer a first class rest farm for guests and tubercular patients who may benefit from the climate.
Eight Boy Scouts from the Los Alamos Ranch School Otowi New Mexico travel with Assistant Scoutmaster F B Church on a statewide tour during Easter vacation. They visited Pecos Valley Carlbad caverns and will return via the Santa Rita mines. The mounted troop is among the few in the United States.
J. B. Spangler arrived to promote four or more rounds of prize fighting at the Pavilion within two or three weeks. He hopes to bring Young Gonzales and Kid Allen from El Paso Juarez for a return bout and is scouting local and regional talent for bouts in Alamogordo and Carrizozo.
At 6 50 p m on March 31 the Presbyterian church hosts an evening program led by Frank Olds titled What Easter Should Mean to Me The event promises a thoughtful discussion and is described as very interesting.
The six performances of the film Wings at the Alamogordo Theatre attracted large audiences from Alamogordo and visiting groups from Tularosa Cloudcroft and surrounding county areas. Viewers praised the realistic scenes and the film film’s historical value for local youth.
