Alamogordo and Tularosa committees urged State Engineer Herbert W. Yeo to drill the three proposed wells deeper than 50 to 75 feet to test underground water development. Wells near Alamogordo, Tularosa, and a state land site south of Valmont are planned at depths of 460 to 500 feet with experimental use and future lease options for locals. Artesia based Western Water Works Co. holds the bid and will install turbine pumps after water is found.

Road Enthusiasts Hold Picnic at Mayhill
Eli Moser of James Canyon with his son Lee attended a Mayhill gathering on March 23 where a large Artesia to Cloudcroft highway meeting was held. The event featured ample meals and drew families from James Canyon Pecos Valley. Senator Moon pledged persistent effort for an all year all weather road Artesia Cloudcroft, with care promised for a 12 mile stretch near the county line. Moser said the Cloudcroft Artesia segment is usable though a 12 mile section needs widening and through traffic from Artesia to Alamogordo hinges on improvements between Cloudcroft and High Rolls.

Contracts will be let soon to gravel surface 14 miles of the Alamogordo Las Cruces highway from the new junction with highway 366 to White Sands. The Lee Wilkerson crew finished grading the two mile Wolfinger ranch cut off to the Alamo gordo El Paso highway. Gravel pits located right of way being arranged haul averaged nine miles. The entire 72 mile stretch to Las Cruces will be gravel surfaced. The 14 mile section will be surfaced six inches deep and six feet wide.

Ridinger builds camp at White Sands on Alamogordo Las Cruces highway
F. L. Ridinger reports 203 cars used the Alamogordo Las Cruces road from 8 am to 8 pm last Sunday with 95 westbound and 108 eastbound. He estimates 75 percent held California and Arizona licenses. He is completing a filling station and developing camp grounds with cabins, windmill water supply, a swimming pool, shade trees, field ovens, groceries, sodas, lodging, and plans for a National Park monument area nearby.

Prospectors report cod paying quantities of lead and zinc with some gold in the Organ Mountains. Mr. Bentley of Organ City has leased claims to El Paso parties who plan ore shipments after April 1. Water well near Valmont yields soft water at 226 feet
J L Mobley, well driller, reports completing a six inch bore six miles southeast of Valmont for Henry Week a El Paso dairy operator. Water rose to within 122 feet of surface. A second well for Mr Cress one and a half miles south of Valmont 111 feet deep with four and a half inch bore rose 28 feet. Both ventures support poultry dairy operations and hint at more wells nearby.

Shooting at Ninth Street Corner Leaves Green Hospitalized
Henry Stanley is jailed on possible assault charges after shooting Lee Green, a Penta coastal preacher, at the corner of Ninth Street and Florida Avenue shortly after noon Wednesday. Green, struck in the left leg, required hospital care as witnesses, including Green and Mrs. Green, recounted a multi day quarrel over religion. Stanley, who claims he acted to stop Green’s religious influence on his wife, says he fired after Green threatened him. an eye witness, John Richards Jr, supported the sequence. Police reported the incident and will file charges likely for assault with a deadly weapon or with intent to commit mayhem.

Free pork all plight Sunday leads to Hernandez arrest
Alejandro Hernandez is jailed on assault with a deadly weapon after a Sunday clash on New York Avenue in the Spanish American quarter. He allegedly fired a gun at Frank Gonzales, who, with his brothers Jose and Nick, pursued the suspect and beat him. Police later found Hernandez bruised and questioned him. Jane and Nick Hernandez were later found wanted in Carrizozo and turned over to Lincoln county officers. Hernandez’s hearing has not yet been set.
