Alamogordo and Otero County mourn the death of Frank Bennett a longtime rancher and former Otero County commissioner He died at Rousseau Hospital after suffering a stroke following pneumonia complications He would have been 60 in July Survived by his widow Brooke Jones a son J T Bennett of El Paso two daughters Mrs Chas Dean and two other sons Wilson and Boodler Bennett Funeral services were held at Leadinghaus Mullins chapel with Rev Eual Lawson officiating Interment at Mount Vista cemetery Also surviving are his mother Mrs J W Bennett sisters and brothers among others from Lubbock El Paso and surrounding areas.
Henry Tarwater and family depart Alamogordo with two sons in law and daughters to seek a new home along the Pacific Coast. The party plans to visit Clara Cole in Al Cotton near San Diego, relatives in Mercedes California, and travel through Oregon and Washington.
Two tickets emerge from a March 15 mass meeting for Alamogordo town election. Citizens Ticket lists Mayor Eber McKinley and trustees Lewis Gillis Walter Mullins plus police judge James A Tatum. Town Ticket has George A Shipley for mayor trustees Joseph Roessler Reginald Smith and J A Tatum as magistrate. Filing deadline is March 29 at 4 pm with lot drawing April 6.
Mrs. R. G. Starley announced the Girl Scout World Pageant to be held at the Community Center at 7 30 p m on March 30. Scenes feature Brownie and Girl Scout troops from various groups with a finale by flag bearers. costumes and dances prepared by troops and mothers committees. Public invited with no admission charge.
Plans finalize for Sunrise Rite at White Sands National Monument led by Grace Methodist Church Alamogordo Youth Division. Services include bugle call, invocations, hymns The Old Rugged Cross and He Arose, scripture reading, and a sermon. Transportation provided with New Mexico Transportation Co and Holloman Air Base bus, caravan gathers at high school for 5 15 a m departure. service to begin 6 15 a m.
A Friday evening gathering at the Otero County Community Center elected new officers for the Otero County Chapter of the Reserve Officers' Association. Major G. F. Hanson became president with Capt. H. G. O'Dell as vice president and Capt. Bob Dean as secretary treasurer. Major Foster spoke on the new armed forces organization and noted meeting credit for attendees. The group approved monthly meetings on the last Thursday each month and set a progressive program with new committees chaired by Major Hanna.
Herbert Brunell and Alex J. Haynes announce the formal opening of Brunell-Haynes Co at 803 Pennsylvania on March 27 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A new building houses a 50 by 50 foot showroom for Pontiac cars International trucks John Deere farm equipment and Goodrich tires. The 75 by 50 foot rear will be a full automotive and machine shop. Brunell serves as business manager and Haynes as sales and service manager.
Col Paul F. Helmick at Holloman Air Force Base summarizes army rules on credit to enlisted men. Businesses must obtain approval from the soldier's commanding officer before extending credit and avoid creating obligations the soldier cannot meet. The War Department will not assist in collecting debts incurred without prior consent.
The First Presbyterian Church choir led by Mrs. C A McNatt presents a March 28 morning service of praise. Miss Simns and Mrs. France play an organ and piano prelude, with solos by Miss Edwina Mickie. Anthems include Go to Dark Gethsemane and Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, followed by a choral benediction The Lord Bless You and Keep You.
The Los Alamos Studio will open Saturday March 27 at 120 Ohio Ave led by Lyle Hansen and Dean Thompson. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm Saturdays with after hours by appointment. Hansen served in a Navy Combat Photographic unit with campaigns in the Philippines Guam Iwo Jima and Japan landings. Thompson is a long time commercial photographer currently with a National Aircraft concern at Holoman Air Force Base.
Local school board seeks relief from overcrowding by appealing to Holloman Air Force Base and contractor groups in El Paso. About 120 Holloman employees families send children to Alamo Gordo schools daily with enrollment expected to rise as base population grows.
Walter Lafferty and W. M. Kush urge local support as the Red Cross campaign struggles to meet a $3500 quota. They cite past help to 400+ service members and 600 veterans, $5900 spent, and aim to replenish disaster funds and fund blood programs. Volunteers and first aid training highlight community impact.
Mrs Paul M Irvine Jr was taken to McBride Hospital in Las Cruces for emergency hospitalization on Thursday and is reported doing well. Her husband is a State College student and son of Mr and Mrs Paul Irvine.
The Presbyterian Ladies Aid will meet Thursday afternoon April 1 at 2 39 at the home of Mrs. Eber McKinley with Mrs. J A Scruggs as co hostess. All the ladies of the church and friends are invited.
White Sands National Monument hosts Play Day on April 10 with school children and the public. Highlights include softball, volleyball, tug of war, track events in multiple age divisions, a sack race and three-legged races, plus a girls tumbling demo. Hosts are Coaches Rolla Buck and Fred Sells with attending officials Governor Thomas J and M R Tillotson.
Voters in Tularosa will choose a mayor, clerk, and two four year trustees on April 6 at the town hall. Two complete slates contest the election: the Progressive Ticket lists Dan W. King mayor and W. L. Weber clerk with Ed A Molguin and John B. Close as trustees. the Citizens Ticket lists G. L. Swanson mayor Emilio Duran clerk with Ernest Bookout and Ralph Vigil as trustees. Weber and Close seek re election while other positions attract new candidates. A. L. George has served as mayor pro tem since the death of Gerald D Champion in an air crash.
Promoters of a two year old organization voted to drop a county league after meetings failed to attract enough teams. The Vets of last season will play independently hoping out of town clubs join. Monista at Hol Jomon Air Force Base Mescalery Indians may field teams. Black Sox of Alamogordo could revive with four local teams.
Mr and Mrs Frank Felts formerly of Alamogordo and most recently of Clovis have moved to make their home here Mr Felts works at Foster As Golf Barber shop on Tenth and I Mrs Felts is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jake Work.
Roswell representatives Herbert Bayes and Mrs Lucille Alexander attended the Roswell meeting. Claude Simpson of Roswell was elected chairman of the group at the Friday session with Alamogordo Chamber not represented.
In 1916 Alamogordo bought the water system for 275000 and repaid 597308.15 with interest by 1950. The city now proposes 500000 in bonds over 25 years to double domestic supply and expand irrigation. If approved, debt cost near 687500, to be retired by property taxes and higher water revenues.
Chris Fox manager of the El Paso GC of C and guest speaker at the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce quarterly dinner at the Community Center will stress benefits from COC efforts. Jillian Bagwell says GB Oliver outlines 1948 Otero County Fair plans. Mrs. Bagwell will discuss the coming year and frontier days in June marking Alamogordo's fiftieth anniversary.
Mrs. A. A. McNatt and Mrs. J. EB. Greee returned Sunday from a several weeks stay at Hot Springs New Mexico.
Otero County teachers gathered in Silver City for the annual convention of the Southwestern District of the New Mexico Educational Association. Mrs. Jennie Clayton of Tularosa served as president and Maudie Mae Bennett as secretary, with most Alamogordo and Tularosa teachers and rural Otero educators in attendance.
