The 124 mile federal aid project on the Alamogordo El Paso highway near Newman is nearing completion and may open early in April. The project is priced at 123000 dollars with state work planned on the remaining 10 miles of the El Paso highway.
About $10 000 to be spent on roads and trails starting May 1 to guard against forest fires in Lincoln National Forest. District headquarters seek $11 000 more for special projects. A proposed White Mountain trail runs from the summit to A B Fall ranch. E C Pfingston was fatally injured last year reaching a fire in this area. 52 hours were needed to move his stretcher to Fort Stanton Hospital where he died. Roads to improve include Scott Abel canyon linking Sacramento with Agua Chiquita and Weed to aid response into Blowdown area of Sacramento River. Another link Bluewater and Perk canyons in Weed district. About $1 500 to maintain 20 miles of forest roads.
Assistant Attorney General Frank M. Patton states under the new election code only registered voters may cast ballots in municipal elections. The opinion adds registration can be done by proxy for a qualified registrant and need not be personal.
Mrs D A Boucher died suddenly from a stroke at her Alamogordo home on March 18 standing as a resident since 1906. Born December 15 1868 in Robertville Canada she married in 1893 in Grand Rapids Wisconsin. She leaves husband five daughters three sons and funeral services were held at the Catholic church led by Rev Father Giran with most children present.
Sam Howard, who moved to the Elk area last December, is jailed in Chaves county by Sheriff Albert Burch after arrest at Bent Monday by Deputy Doc Herdon of Cloudcroft. He admits burglarizing the Elk store but denies robbing the post office and won’t name accomplices. A postoffice inspector’s report is awaited.
Mesdames W D Bryars D G Herron and Vel Lane hosted a St Patrick Bridge party Tuesday afternoon at the Bryars home.
A romance from Alamogordo ended in El Paso on St Patrick's Day 1928 when Bert T Cusack wed Olive short of Los Angeles. The couple returned to Alamogordo to reside where Cusack works at the Alamogordo post office.
Sunday schedule lists Bible school at 10 and preaching at 11 with special music. Afternoon Sunbeams at 3 and B Y P U at 6 20 followed by evangelistic services at 7 15. Wednesday 7 15 features song prayer and Bible study. pastor Herbert Haywood invites all to attend and prays for greater usefulness.
A mass meeting at the courthouse last Friday night nominated a single town election ticket. George E Moffett was named permanent chairman and E P Rees secretary. The ticket lists Mayor J W Palmer Recorder J Y Latham and Trustees J F Petty R Baldonado T A Frasier and G E Moffett.
A call from J. E Gregg and Chas E Thom as invites 45 delegates from Otero county to meet in Alamogordo on Tuesday April 10 to elect delegates to the state convention in Santa Fe on Saturday April 14 and to consider other county business.

The road served the public about 22 years before a proposed new route aims to largely follow the old alignment but with final-mile changes into Highrolls.
Mr and Mrs C R Walter visited Alamogordo Friday staying with Mr and Mrs R G Herron. They traveled by car from Chicago to Amarillo via route 66 then route 366 praising the well marked route 366 and noting gas prices from 10 to 25 cents per gallon with an average around 17 cents. The couple contrasted the markings on route 366 with those on route 66.
A lost keyring with several keys is reported missing. Return to this office to claim a reward of 3.32 dollars.
Holmes & Jackson recently acquired a concentration mill for the Warnock mines. The machinery arrived at Alamogordo from Tucson and will be trucked to the installation site for immediate operation. Local experts expect the concentrator to succeed, with ore gains reducing freight and trucking costs as higher grade ore is found nearby.
D E Howell known as Bud Howell travels to Alamogordo to prepare abstracts for 320 acres near Dog Canyon Rincon country for Malcolm Shelton of Amarillo Texas. Shelton would buy to create a game refuge with seasonal visits. Howell notes cattle market timing guides his future ranching moves.
Funeral services for Mrs C L R Combs mother of Mrs J S Folsom of Alamogordo will be held Friday morning March 23 at 10 30 a m at the Presbyterian church. Old time friends and O E S members recall Mrs Combs coming to Alamogordo in 1908 with her daughter and granddaughter seeking health.
The Eastern New Mexico Area Council to host the fourth annual Scout Jam Boree in Roswell on Friday April 20. Some 500 Scouts and leaders are expected to attend with events in first aid knot tying model airplane flying wall scaling archery fire building hatchet throwing. An afternoon swim and barbecue supper follow a 5 pm program at the Country Club then a campfire close.
Mrs. Shelah Groom served as hostess last Thursday afternoon at a St Patrick Bridge party. The event featured green and white decorations and a festive atmosphere.

Forest officials report the current fire danger is very satisfactory in Lincoln National Forest. Snowfall late in the week covers much of the area with 5 to 6 inches on the summit. W L Stiles arrives from Crook National Forest to become chief clerk in Alamogordo, Robi Hinchey moving to Safford. Supervisor C Fred Arthur surveys Ruidoso for recreation and fire protection. R B Ewing and Strickland head to Fairchilds ranger station for timber sales this weekend.
The State College Band of about 27 members passed through Alamogordo on the way to Carrizozo for a concert and played again on the courthouse lawn Monday. Dr. Kent, president, thanks Alamogordo for the welcome and praises local support from the Chamber of Commerce, noting public focus on athletics often overshadows other valuable college achievements.
A letter from El Paso notes Alamogordo town trustees improving finances by reducing bonded debt and outlines refunding options under the new law. It cites $52,000 in water bonds bought at 95 to 96 cents, predicts future savings, and highlights tax advantages and strong investor interest in Alamogordo bonds.
The Literary Department of the Woman's Club arranged a Friday program with Miss Connie Young reading and Senator Louise H Coe and Mrs 0 M Boggess and Mrs Haywood performing musical numbers. Mrs A B Thomas directs with hostesses Mrs Nathan Snyder Mrs G F Rousseau and Mrs R Wilford coordinating. The club seeks support for a concert by Elizabeth Garrett New Mexico’s blind poet and singer on April 6 in aid of Alamogordo Camp Fire Girls.
Equipment for the Alamo Base Ball team has shipped except for the suits which will arrive March 30. Grand stand work should start soon as four games are set, two at Stanton and two at Alamo, including a Methodist church benefit with proceeds to the M E church building committee. The first team features Will Campbell see notes, Manuel Marcus, Herman Routh, John Rolland, Alfred Gillis, Henry Carr, S Hill, R F Coombs, Ratliff, O Hill, Lawler, Thompson, J W Ware as coach.
H E Carter owner of a Ruidoso town site arrived in Alamogordo after wintering in California. He described a strong influx of visitors and locals preparing for a prosperous season, praising New Mexico roads as well constructed and well kept aiding travel and settlement interest.
A Republican County Convention is called for Alamo Gordo New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Tuesday April 10 1928 to select delegates to the State Convention in Santa Fe on April 14 1928 and nine delegates and nine alternates to the National Convention in Kansas City Missouri on June 12 1928 to nominate a President and Vice President. Precinct delegates are allocated by the 1926 governor race vote with each precinct at least one delegate. Precincts listed include Alamogordo La Luz Tularosa Three Rivers High Rolls Weed Mayhill Orogrande Cloudcroft Orange Beds Valmont Pinon plus Lulu Ce and others. Precinct primaries are set for Saturday April 7 1928 at 2 p.m. J E Gregg chairman and Chas E Thomas secretary.
A mass meeting at the courthouse Monday night placed a complete municipal ticket in nomination to oppose the Friday ticket. Mayor Fred B. Evans and Recorder Mack Missik lead the slate with trustees Vel Lane Lou Leading House F R Miller and S W Stout. A five member campaign committee was named to support the ticket.
Santa Fe reports the tax commission set new auto valuations effective immediately. New automobiles are taxed at 60 percent of factory price, with 1927 models at 50 percent, 1926 at 36 percent, 1925 at 20 percent, and 1924 or earlier at 10 percent, down from 85 percent previously. Governor Dillon sought further annual cuts.
A Monday night meeting failed to finalize its program and nominated Dr Vans for mayor who declined citing school board duties. The vacancies committee then proposed Martin Michel who agreed to run on the Peoples Progressive Ticket.
Mrs. L. R. Combs died Sunday in Long Beach California. Born in Girard Pennsylvania she lived here years and moved to California in 1913. She leaves three daughters and four sons. A former State Superintendent of Scientific Instruction in Illinois she was active in charity and church work.
Las Cruces reports N M Smith known as corn king of the Mesilla valley ships 2000 pounds of Mexican June corn to Khartoum Sudan via a San Francisco deal. Smith, who came from Kansas 12 years ago, started growing corn there and now seeds are used by eleven southern states. Phoenix district planted over 30000 pounds last year as he expands to 70 acres.

State Land Commissioner B F Pankey and D W Wakelee suffered broken ribs when their car overturned on the Las Vegas road Wednesday afternoon. State Corporation Commissioner Hugh Williams and Mrs Williams were shaken. Mrs Sarah Hudson, ninety, suffered severe shock. The crash occurred about twenty miles from Santa Fe on the way to Las Vegas for the cornerstone laying of the new federal building.
Charles Springer of the New Mexico State Highway Department informs Alamogordo officials that the Alamo gordo Las Cruces road project has been fully considered by the Commission. The state will attempt to secure funds and seek county cooperation, with details to be announced in a few days.

Prohibition witness Howard Beacom returns from Albuquerque after testifying on the air plane case involving Smoky Taylor and aviator Kenneth Oliver. The case marked a sensational first use and seizure of an airplane in New Mexico liquor transport.
Camp Fire Girls received a banquet last Monday night in the Club room, hosted by their director Mrs. N. D. Snyder. The event featured a fine banquet and social time with music by the boys' orchestra.
The Woman's Bible Class of the Tularosa Baptist church surprised Mrs. Wm. C. Hunter on her birthday at Mrs. Edwin Peppard's home. Members praised her faithful service with expressions of appreciation and a poem by the pastor. A aluminum keepsake was presented with words from Mrs. Haywood.
Dr Ira C Young of El Paso will preach at the Episcopal church on Indiana avenue in Alamogordo Sunday March 26. His sermon titled Work and Bread invites all Labor Union members to attend. He cites conditions in the Pennsylvania anthracite coal fields and notes increased thought on relations between capital and labor.
