A lengthy retrospective recounts Alamogordo’s rapid rise from a coy teeming mining district to a bustling town. It highlights C. B. Eddy and J. A. Eddy’s railroad ventures, coal hopes at Salado, and the 1899 hotel opening with El Paso leaders. It notes diverse population growth, civic clubs, entertainment, and the 1898-1899 boom era before winding toward present recollections.
Alamogordo commemorates its 50th founding anniversary with a special 3 inch square rubber stamp bearing the legend Home of Rocket Research. The stamp, designed by Martin Mort, will be used on letters posted June 5 to 7 as part of celebrations led by the Chamber of Commerce and approved by postal authorities.
The Vacation Bible School at Grace Methodist Church runs June 14 to 25 with classes from 9 to 11:30 daily. Age groups from three through ninth grade are offered with themed courses and several teachers guiding each department. Handicrafts and games will be included across all levels.

Union leaders urged defeating the proposed New Mexico constitutional amendment to outlaw the closed shop. Speakers warned of legal challenges, urged voter registration, and touted labor-endorsed candidates including J. J. Dempsey, Floyd Kennedy, Eugene Allison, and James Morrow.
Five bids were read at the Community Center for a pipeline from Alamogordo to La Luz Canyon Springs. Firms from El Paso Las Cruces and Albuquerque submitted bids on 53 items for a project funded by $500,000 bonds. Engineers estimate construction plus burying the line at just over $200,000 and the board extended completion to 100 weather working days. Award or rejection to be decided by the mayor and board.
The Territorial Legislature in 1899 created Otreo County from parts of Chaves Lincoln and Dona Ana. Gov. Otero appointed George Curry as sheriff. Alamogordo hosted a grand celebration with the governor his wife and young son as honored guests at a historical party in the Alamogordo Hotel.
The Eddy Bros. shifted operations to Alamogordo drawing expert developers like W. H. Woods and family and Mr. and Mrs. John Walker who led irrigation and tree post work. Carroll Woods joined as a youth, T. A. Frasier and wife bought the first lot sold by the Improvement Co. The courthouse began in 190 but was finished later. a satirical operetta Pinafore played in the courtroom, youngsters filled the rafters, and an annex followed for federal court needs.
Unsettled weather in Otero County brought hail Sunday night damaging fruit at Rans Turner Ranch and nearby properties owned by Connie Henry and Charlie Klopfer. Crockett Place Apple crop suffered severe losses while Willie Walker reports near total fruit damage on Burro Plate. Sacramento Mountains saw widespread rain with flooding in arroyos and water replenishment in La Luz Canyon reservoirs.
The Alamoverdo American Legion led by Commander Albert Rowland and the American Legion Auxiliary with Mrs. Raymond Matteson conducted memorial services at Monte Vista Cemetery on Sunday. A Buckshot Bell firing squad fired salutes over the graves of Hamilton Kimberlin, a Mexican War veteran buried in 1915, and Albert Smith, World War II veteran, as cars and wreaths filled the cemetery.
Mr and Mrs H C Tally of Cloudcroft recall coming fifty years ago when Alamoverdo was founded. Tally came from Austin Texas to timber work with Bob Roberts who became Gallups sheriff while his brother Dee serves there. Mrs Tally recalls the Gee Poe family and a railroad building camp near Carrizozo. The couple plans to attend Frontier Day.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Burch and their daughter Miss Margaret visited Santa Fe on May 27. Mrs. Burch attended a state meeting of postmasters and assistants, with J. A. McRae Jr. present as assistant Alamogordo postmaster.
County clerks receive Republican and Democratic primary ballots for June 8. Otero County has 3985 Democratic and 1657 Republican registered voters with 969 independents excluded from party ballots. Contests include district judge races and numerous state offices. voting will use established boxes across Alamogordo Tularosa and other precincts. Sample ballots will be available at polling places.
Mr. Vance Smith and his family relocate from Escondida to El Paso this week. He will work in El Paso signal shops, having served as signal maintainer at Escondida for two years.
The press notes that the continental United States is projected to consume about 7,800,000 short tons of sugar in the 1948 calendar year. The estimate reflects wartime and postwar demand patterns influencing food supply and distribution.
Town Manager Ben Rutz reported that recent rains helped the domestic water situation and eased irrigation demand. The earthen reservoir north of town was used May 15 to 21, with water to be diverted only if Alamo Canyon Springs and wells fall short. Flood water from La Luz Canyon briefly entered the reservoir but will need days to settle before use. No domestic water restrictions are currently planned.
The Alamogordo Rainbow for Girls sends a large delegation to the New Mexico Grand Assembly in Roswell from June 3 to 9. Miss Marjorie Lane, former Worthy Advisor, will be installed as Grand Worthy Advisor. The group includes many local members and a plea for carpooling to transport all attendees.
Max Lane of Alamogordo has been elected president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers student branch at New Mexico A. and M. College. A junior majoring in electrical engineering, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Vel M Lane.
Alamogordo marks its 50th with a two day Frontier Day roping program at the Prather Rodeo Grounds. Events include a jackpot roping, a linked match between John Thomas and James Cox, a Sunday rematch with Walter Isaacs, and a white Brahma bull ride by Tom and Joe McNatt in a wild show open Sunday. The Alamogordo Firemen handle advance ticket sales and Jack pot roping features.
Alamogordo honor student Bill Quimby tested for college entry at Roswell and gained acceptance to Harvard Penn State University and Stanford. He is son of Dr and Mrs Neil Quimby and was named among the state’s outstanding students.
Mrs Ivalee Habden National Staff member for Cactus Region and NM advisor visited Roswell and Artesia to prepare for the Area Council meeting held at Artesia Methodist Church on May 25. Communities represented included Alamogordo Artesia Capitan Carlsbad Carrizozo Hobbs Jal Lincoln Lovington Mayhill Mescalero Roswell and Tularosa. Camp Mary White registration reached two thirds indicating likely full capacity for seven weeks says Julia George Roswell Area Office Secretary.
