A 1900s column notes Congress requires wireless telegraphy on steamers carrying 50 or more passengers within 200 miles after July. It highlights saved lives and money, the evolving reach of wireless, and a hopeful view of future interstellar messages through a “still small voice.”
The New Mexico Institute for the Blind held an on campus athletic meet last Saturday in favorable weather. Class A and B events included standing broad jump yard dash and chinning with top marks by Juan Mestas Gertrudis Villarreal and Yiacere Gashtea. Closing exercises are set for Wednesday evening the 7th with public attendance invited.
The ladies of the Baptist church present a pantomime titled Holy ity and Almost Persuaded at the church tonight starting at eight o'clock. Admission is 10 cents.
A (poetic) exhortation praises hometown pride and the indispensable citizen. It lauds residents who know local benefits, overlook shortcomings, and illustrate the town’s advantages to visitors, urging grumblers to reflect on patriotism and community memory.
G A R members and the community are invited to the Kerrs farm home in College Addition on Wednesday June 14 to celebrate Flag Day. An appropriate program and remarks are planned with baskets to share for a pleasant profitable day honoring the old flag.
Grace M. E. church hosted a memorial service honoring both blue and gray veterans. Rev Ed Le Breton delivered a lengthy sermon praising the soldiers and their families, stressing unity and national progress. Governor William J. Mills proclaimed June 22 1911 as The Call of New Mexico day to promote territorial development.
In the New Mexico Journal of Education the Alamogordo schools under Superintendent Chas. D. George show a good year. Two hundred volumes were added to the school library during the term.
