Fireworks Show Draws Big Crowd at White Sands
A July 4 fireworks display at White Sands Monument drew 5780 attendees in 1153 vehicles from 29 states plus Alaska Mexico and Puerto Rico. New Mexico led with 692 vehicles and 3621 people while Texas and California followed. Irving Seligman headed the Chamber display aided by Sid Goldberg and Jack Denney Jr with Bill Anderson on fire safety. Denney was slightly burned by a premature explosion.

Indian Couple Celebrates 50 Married Years
Asa and Ramona Oaklugle Mescalero Indians on the White Tail reservation marked their 50th anniversary on June 25. Married in Port Sill Oklahoma on June 25 1898 they later moved to Mescalero in 1912. Both educated at Carlisle they are leaders on the reservation and Asa held many U S military medals and served as official interpreter for Theodore Roosevelt. They have eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren with two daughters living.

Airport Plot Is Enlarged Near Alamogordo
Capt Lawrence H. Dyvad announces expansion of White Sands Commercial Airport southeast of Alamogordo by adding 171 acres to the original plot. Two 4000 foot runways will cross, with modern buildings along the north boundary near Highway 70, bringing the field to Civil Aeronautics Administration Class 3 status. Gasoline facilities will serve the first plane on the northeast runway, with the northwest–southeast runway to be graded next.

Tragic death in stolen truck crash near town
Juan Garcia Gonzales, 17, died last Thursday from a skull fracture when a stolen pickup overturned on the highway north of town. The vehicle, stolen in Roswell, was used by Gonzales to visit relatives in Alamogordo. He had served a few months in the army and was born in Lincoln to Felipe Gonzales. Funeral services were held from St Marys Church on July 4 with burial in the local Catholic cemetery.
