Idle last Sunday the Vets baseball team will face a Independents from Artesia Sunday at 200. This is the second Pecos Valley team the Vets have played this year after two close games with Carlsbad. Artesia is rated near Carlsbad Potash and expected to provide tough competition.
Harold Allen of Alamogordo has taken a post with the New Mexico State Employment Service local office. He will perform itinerant service at Mescalero Carrizozo and Ruidoso under the Oxero and Lincoln Counties office manager Mrs Eunice Moley. The Allens reside at 10 Texas Avenue Alamogordo.
The White Sands fireworks show moved from July 3 to July 4 after a Chamber of Commerce vote due to attendance concerns. The Otero County Fair Picnic also shifts to July 4 with a 6 p.m. start, while the program features 49 firework types and a three-part finale. Free bus rides to the sands run 6 to 7:30 p.m. with safety rules for children and fundraising ongoing through local coin boxes.
W A Lewis writes from Hurley New Mexico that he and Mrs Lewis survived the Vanport flood but not by rumor. He served with army engineers walked dike and watched 25 000 housed victims, many rescued by Red Cross Salvation Army and VFW crews. He recalls scenes of families stranded on rooftops and across the dike before evacuations and aid reached them.
Hour long funeral services for Mrs. Howard Beacham were set for Friday at 4 p m in the Leadinghaus Mullins Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Vista Cemetery beside two infant daughters and her brother Edward Chase. Mrs. Beacham died Tuesday at 4 p m at her home on Indiana Avenue after years of illness. She was known for restaurant work with her husband and active civic and Episcopal church involvement. Surviving are her mother, a son, three daughters, seven grandchildren, and many relatives.
George Roberts formerly of Alamogordo has been selected as one of seven army experts to go to Korea to study options to ease a power shortage. He is a geologist with the army corps of engineers in Oakland California and is nephew of Mrs Muray Hanson of Alamogordo. He attended New Mexico Military Institute and Colorado School of Mines and served as a navy lieutenant in World War II. Mrs Roberts is Doris Gaddis, daughter of Dr and Mrs L R Gaddis now of El Paso.
Alamogordo Lions Club held a ladies night and new officers for the coming year were installed at a Plaza Buffet chicken supper. Harold Chittum was named president with Chas BINDER as 1st vice president and Walter Mullins as 2nd vice president. Walter Lafferty became 3rd vice president. J A McRae is secretary. Edgar Price treasurer. Johnny Tillotson is Lion Tamer and Chas Dean Tail Twister. Mrs Johnny Tillotson, acting as Tail Twister, collected 60 dollars in fines. Directors are Fred Roessler and Dale Scott. holdovers Bill Anderson and Victor Smith. Pledges for Pioneer Days Whisker Growing contest were signed.
Mrs Ollie Davis and her children Dickie Susan and Mrs Helen Wilford of El Paso were weekend guests of their parents Mr and Mrs R Wilford.
Representative Sam Rayburn of Texas received a gavel gift from Alamogordo manager A P Grider for use as permanent chairman at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The gavel was crafted by Jason Daugherty from Columbus New Mexico oynx and Luz Canyon walnut burl, with a leather case.
Regional forester at Albuquerque issued a ban on all fireworks in the national forests of New Mexico and Arizona due to extremely dry conditions. Lincoln National Forest assistant supervisor K A Keeney cited lightning sparked fires near Sacramentos as example of hazard. Four small fires, lightning caused, were quickly found and extinguished.
John Thomas Haynie is recovering after a rattlesnake bite at the Bell ranch Cox Well. He was bitten on the right knee and rushed to Rousseau hospital with life in danger but improved after the first 24 hours his complete recovery is expected. Grandfather H Whitmore witnessed the incident and keeps watch with tools to dispatch the snake.
Lee Colt Jim Bob owned by O M and Vincent Lee won $3,000 plus a share of added purse at Holywood Park on opening day. Time 23 seconds for quarter mile. futurity drew 29 foals, 18 represented in May tryouts, total stake about $5,000. Colt shin backed and withdrawn until Albuquerque races. other entries include Mesa Miss and Cleve Brown.
The state canvassing board finalizes unofficial returns showing L A Hendrix beating Roy T Moore by 133 votes for the Republican lieutenant governor nomination. Hendrix will join Manuel Lujan on the GOP ticket as running mate for the November 2 general election.
A poll of businesses in Ala mogordo shows Monday July 5 will be observed as a holiday with most shops closed all or part of the day. Mrs. Lillian Bagwell, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, reports the finding.
The Cloudcroft Ropers Club sponsored a successful Hill-Top Rodeo with large crowds and keen competition. Saturday features included calf roping and team tying with top times by Buz Taylor and Buddy Hansen, while Sunday closed with a final matched roping contest won by Chalk Norton over Floyd Green.
Richard V. Bright announces a public cowboy dance at the Alamogordo Community Center on July 3 from 8 p m to midnight. The western band Jack and his Westerners of El Paso will perform for an informal as you are event during the July 4th weekend.
Cadwallader Washburn, noted local artist and National Academy of Design member, announces a public exhibition at the Community Center on Thursday July 1 from 5 30 to 9 30. Admission is free and the show features dry point etchings and paintings from travels worldwide.
