Last Friday morning about 7:00 a fire alarm signaled a blaze that consumed a historic frame building south of the Taxi station across from Mrs. Jass Lodging House. Owned by Alph Morgan of the Alamogordo News staff, it had housed J. H. Meade and Mrs. Meade until two years ago. The fire, origin undetermined, left contents and structure practically a total loss despite swift Volunteer Fire Department action. Meade had gone out for breakfast. inquiries feared he was inside but the door was forced open. Insurance was meager on both building and contents. the structure dated to 1895 and formerly housed the Alamogordo News after conversion from Sacramento Chief. Morgan has not stated plans for a replacement.
The Red Cross reports ladies sewing surgical dressings knitting and making hospital garments. A work room in the Masonic Hall operates 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday Thursday and Friday, with knitters urged to submit completed work promptly. The welfare office at New York Ave and Eighth St. is open 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday while furnace trouble closed the room briefly.
Alamogordo Army Air Base 8 reports the premiere of the Second Air Force battle anthem Take the Sun and Keep the Stars on KOA Denver at 9 p m January 30. The piece honors Brigadier General Kenneth N Walker born in Cerrillos New Mexico in 1898 and missing in action since January 5 1943 after a daylight bombing raid on ships at Rabaul New Britain earning the Medal of Honor.
Dan Nichols translates Ringling Martine a Mescalero Apache who served aboard a U.S. Navy transport during the Tarawa invasion. Martine describes the voyage from California to New Zealand to the Pacific war zone, air attacks, beach assault chaos, and the courage of Marines including two Indian Marines and a Navajo ceremony. He notes Mescalero youths serving in the armed forces and honors the United States and Geronimo lineage.
The Alamogordo Rainbow for Girls names Miss June Parker Worthy Advisor and Miss Addlyn Painter Associate Advisor. Other officers include Miss Marjorie Lane Charity and Miss Edwinna Kimmons Hope. The group, linked to Masonic and Eastern Star, draws members from Otero county and will install at the Masonic Hall tonight.
Mrs Paskesen celebrated her 66th birthday Monday as the Presbyterian Ladies Aid honored her with a plant and cake. The group has long marked her birthday with a few friends beyond the church circle.
Hospital notes report several births and medical cases. A daughter weighing 5 pounds 13 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs H Ro McNeeley Sr of Alamogordo on a January Wednesday in 1944. Lydia May arrived January 25 to Mr. and Mrs Esau Castillo of Tularosa. A son named David Eugene, 6 pounds 10 ounces, was born January 22 to Rev and Mrs J M Gollenwater of Cloudcroft. Judith Ann, six pounds, was born January 20 to Mr. and Mrs Michael Del Penso. Mrs Edna Stillwell was admitted January 26 for surgical treatment with satisfactory condition. Frank Casaus of Prestridge Lumber is recovering from a foot accident and expected to return home soon.
The Republican Party of New Mexico calls a county convention in Alamo Verde New Mexico February 2 1944 at 10 30 AM to elect ten delegates and ten alternates to the state convention February 12 1944 and handle any proper business. Precinct chairmen are urged to organize precinct conventions and follow proxy rules limiting to five proxies by any delegate with proxies held by a voter of the delegate’s precinct. Signed by County Chairman Gerald D Champion and Secretary Irvin Menger. Precinct meeting places and delegate counts listed.
USDA reports show net income of farm operators from current operations up sharply through 1943, outpacing farm wage gains. Wages rose 11% while net income jumped 32% in 1943. January wage levels hit twenty year highs, farm marketings reached 17.3 billion dollars through November, and crop income rose 23 percent aided by higher prices. Dairy payments averaged 13.19 per producer nationally, with Western Region totals near 19 for 168,189 producers.
A joint drive by WEA WPB and the War Manpower Commission targets lumber shortages. Marvin Jones WHA Administrator urges State and County USDA War Boards to place farmers and workers in woods and mills during winter. USDA field workers will instruct farmers on sound forest practices while WMC coordinates worker transfers.
American farmers have purchased more machinery in the last ten years than the previous century. An IWA postpones enrichment of bakery products to May 1 1944 to avoid niacin shortages. After May 1 all yeast breads and doughnuts using white flour face enrichment rules, while biscuits and crackers are exempt.

War Production Board grants priority for A L Dunn and Herbert H Callaway to construct a modern stucco bus depot at the corner of Pennsylvania and 1st street across from the Post Office. The facility will serve Alamogordo Air Base bus traffic and begin work immediately.
Enthusiasm grows among servicemen for the Sunday singing at the USO Club House led by Mr Wallace Rlbright with Livelyn Jennings on piano. The 4:30 p.m. program precedes a snack hour with tea coffee and sandwiches prepared by Rebekahs including Mrs Grissom Cribbs Bartlett Dahlke Dudley and Betty Hufft.
Mr and Mrs Dale Scott purchase the Mack Johnson residence on Ohio Avenue with possession expected soon Corporal and Mrs Bill Grilli will move into the Scotts current Ohio Avenue home as the new occupants

They will also be at Mescalero February 1, Tularosa February 2, with hours 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Citizens must file if 1943 income meets set thresholds and bring Form 1125 and W-2 for proper computation.
