The Homestead Flow To Get It In Santa Rosa
So many inquiries have lately been made at this office concerning the laws with reference to filling upon public lands that very are summarized below. The law with reference to filling and patenting mineral claims was published in these columns in our issue of March 9. There are two kinds of filings on public lands open to the intending settler the homestead and the desert entry. The timber entry law has been repealed by Congress. Every citizen of the United States over 21 years of age without regard to sex is entitled under the law to 320 acres of public land. This he may file on as 160 acres homestead and 160 desert, or the whole 320 acres as desert, but he cannot take up the whole 320 acres as a homestead. Any married woman living with her husband or Otherwise may take up 320 acres as a desert entry in her own name independent of her husband. Unmarried females may file on a homestead or desert entry, with full rights. After filing, six months to build and establish residence. Fourteen months to commute to cash entry at 1.25 per acre. otherwise five years to final proof. Desert entry requires five cents per acre and requires irrigation and yearly expenditures of 1 per acre for three years. At four years one must pay 1 per acre additional for patent. Scrip remains scarce but available for certain lands. A Bell joke about railroads and water supply is recounted, with plans to drill deep wells or pipe water for engines along the line. Passenger trains expected by February with morning arrivals and a 30-hour Kansas City run planned, subject to water supply and later reductions.

Transcontinental railway set to reach Alamagordo with wallpaper
The first train of the new transcontinental railway will arrive in Alamagordo around February 1 and carry a car load of premium wallpaper consigned to Geo Warnock. Warnock claims he can discount El Paso prices.

El Paso Rock Island rate policy discussed in Chicago
A. N. Brown, El Paso and Rock Island general freight and passenger agent, went to Chicago to confer on a new rate policy. The adjusted rates favor El Paso jobbers by allowing car lot shipments into El Paso and smaller loads onward, undercutting Denver Albuquerque and Kansas City rivals and discounting St. Louis shippers by about sixty percent. Brown says El Paso line is separate from the main Rock Island system.
