Three hundred ten luminiars lighting the Federal Building drew favorable comment from hundreds of visitors and tourists. The candles in brown paper sacks filled with sand reflect a Mexican and New Mexican festive tradition. A $25 prize for decoration was donated to the local Boy Scouts, and the building will be lit again on New Year’s Eve.
The Alamogordo Woman's Club charity ball on a Saturday at the Alamo Gordo Pavilion features a partial reunion of a square dance set from 40 years ago led by Ollie Miller and Charles Van Winkle. The Blue Bennett Square Dance Club of El Paso performs after a tour that reached New York City. Smoky Wilson Orchestra of El Paso provides the music for what organizers call the year's best attended dance. Proceeds support the club's charity fund.
A U S Forest Service update to 1 p m Dec 28 notes ten inches of snow at Cloudcroft Lincoln National Forest, dry conditions and good skiing with sledding excellent and road conditions passable without chains. Four miles north of Ruidoso there are five inches of new snow, no old snow, dry crust, and good skiing with roads also good. A new sled run is expected to be completed by the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Tatum and daughter Miss Marga spent Christmas in El Paso with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Garretaon and their baby son.

A. D. McDonald of Southern Pacific urges a national policy applying regulation evenly to all transportation forms. He notes railroads faced competition and high costs despite strong wages and tax receipts, citing SP investments in lightweight passenger cars, motive power, and steel rail upgrades in 1939.
Mrs. Guy Frost and her son Carl of El Paso visit the Mobley family for the Sun Carnival parade. Mrs. Laura Ferguson and her children from San Angelo stay with Mrs. Dunn through the holidays, joining in festive events.
An appeal seeks transportation for about 80 Alamogordo Band members to El Paso for New Year's Day. Those attending the Sun Carnival parade and able to offer extra car space should contact band director Mr. Holbert or Supt. McLeskey. The group will assemble at 6:00 a.m. at the Alamogordo Pavilion.

Las Cruces Methodist Church choir staged The King Cometh at the Presbyterian church on Thursday evening December 21, drawing a large audience. The performance followed a courtesy exchange as the Presbyterian Choir had earlier given a cantata in Las Cruces. Afterward, performers and friends were hosted at the home of Mr and Mrs Joan Ref rend.
A letter from Ruth Klopfer thanks Santa Claus for the radio he left at their house. She notes staying in bed is easier with friends’ kindness since she has been sick.
Farmers and local merchants in 10 Corn Belt states held 9348 meetings in the first half of 1939, drawing nearly 93 000 attendees. The talks focused on the AAA farm program, its purposes, consumer protection, public benefits, and how businessmen can support the program. Many urged more meetings to improve farm business ties.
The Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation reports surplus foods align with children’s diets in school lunches. Butter eggs vegetables fruits citrus canned goods flour corn meal cereals form the core supply. The program partners with state welfare, local sponsors, WPA labor, and sponsors often buy additional items locally. Last year 14 000 schools served over 800 000 children. officials aim for 5 000 000 by year end.
