Barela named New Mexico GOP chair at Truth or Consequences

Amy Barela, 49, was elected December 7 to a two year term as state chair of New Mexico's Republican Party during the party's biennial convention at the Civic Center in Truth or Consequences. An Otero County Commissioner and business owner, Barela plans to push a pro Republican agenda while juggling duties in county government.

Public participation debated at Tularosa village meeting

Tularosa Board of Trustees voted December 18 to move unscheduled correspondence and public comments to the end of meetings from the start. Mayor Deborah Cooksey said the change lets the public question the board after agenda items. Trustees also recognized Jefferson Rhodes for 40 years as village attorney.

Lincoln National Forest raises fire danger to moderate

The U S Forest Service raised the Lincoln National Forest fire danger rating from low to moderate as of December 19, covering the Smokey Bear Sacramento and Guadalupe districts. The change reflects ongoing dry weather and the National Fire Danger Rating System. A moderate rating means fires could start accidentally but the chance remains relatively low.

Lawsuit challenges federal delay on pinyon jay protection

Defenders of Wildlife filed a federal suit in Colorado against the U S Fish and Wildlife Service over delay in listing the pinyon jay as endangered. The group cites dwindling jay numbers since 2023 and argues a 12 month finding was required by law while a 2028 decision was planned.
