Former state representative Dr. Terry T. Marquardt recalls learning the value of Capitol action beyond formal meetings while supporting a New Mexico State University Alamogordo Adult Basic Education building project. The Alamogordo optometrist, who served District 53 from 1995 to 2006, used his roles on education and appropriations panels to push the initiative.

Lighting the luminaria tradition in Tularosa
A long standing annual luminaria display guides a lighted town drive in Tularosa New Mexico. The event dates back generations though its exact origin is unknown. The Tularosa Arts and History Council coordinates volunteers to set up and light the display as sunset fades.

First responder dinner planned for Christmas Eve
Since 2012 community members host a hot Christmas style dinner for on-duty first responders. Organizers seek potluck contributions as they prepare to feed about 160 staff from Alamogordo police and fire, Otero County sheriff, AMR, Border Patrol, jail deputies, and Holloman AFB. Leftovers go to COPE and the hospital ER.

Train Derailment Kills Two in Pecos Texas
Two Union Pacific workers died when a train derailed on US 285 near Pecos downtown and crashed into the Pecos Chamber of Commerce building after colliding with a tractor trailer. Three chamber staff were treated and released. Authorities closed nearby roads and warned of detours as cleanup continued.
