Rev Ed LeBreton and his wife Mamie marked their golden anniversary with a joint church gathering at the Undercroft of the Methodist Church on December 4. Friends from Methodist and Presbyterian congregations attended as a program of music readings and tributes unfolded followed by refreshments.
J Turner succeeds Mr Earl Kaupman Jr as director of the Alamogordo USO. Kaupman, who joined the USO in 1942, leaves for overseas duty after serving as program and acting director in Cheyenne. Turner comes from Abilene Texas where he was assistant director of the USO campus unit and studied at McMurry and Columbia University.
Otero County men received induction notices this week with several residents from Alamogordo Tul arosa and Mescalero going into Army Navy Marines. Major Dwight L Hold of the State Selective Service office met with the County Board and welfare workers to discuss physical standards and rehabilitation programs.
Hospital notes report Mrs. John Wilborn with pneumonia and improving after Saturday admission. Her sister Mrs. Ward also pneumonia and improving. Lt. Bernard Love and wife have a daughter Linnie Jo born December 12 weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces. Love to visit from Tuscon Air Base. Other notes include Ray Dean Givens born December 13 weighing 10 pounds, and Ray E. Davis a shoulder injury from an auto accident near Tularosa. Chas Baca recovering after appendectomy. Several hospital staff and visitors named, including Alice Bresnahan joining staff. her husband Dan Bresnahan stationed at the Air Base.
C B Hanson veteran New Mexico mining figure died at Rousseau Hospital after a period of illness. He owned fluorspar properties including the Governor Mine in the Alamogordo Bombing Range and had recently pursued strategic minerals such as beryllium for wartime needs. Survived by widow Maude, son Blanchard, and daughter Jeane, funeral services held at Geren Leadinghaus Mortuary with interment at Mount Vista Cemetery.
The Alamogordo Roping Club reschedules races after rain ruined last Sunday's program. Advertising notes eight races remain with the Champ versus Wonder Lad in the big event. Fans are urged to attend at the Alamo Cardo Roping Club track Sunday if weather cooperates.
The Alamogordo Public Schools announce a free Christmas Vesper program on Sunday December 19 at 4 00 pm. The program features students from North Maryland and other schools performing songs and tableaux in English and Spanish plus a Handel opus The Christmas Messiah performed by sixth and seventh graders and a girls glee club finale with a benediction by Rev Keating.
Miss Commie Swope a Olympia secretarial student earns a certificate of honor from Gregg Shorthand Company New York. She is daughter of Mr and Mrs Swope of 1426 Eighth Ave East and a graduate of Olympia High School.
Lawrence Lockney a longtime New Mexico resident and former Alamogordo newspaperman died November 30 at O'Connor Sanitarium in Santa Cal. He suffered a heart attack at his Greenville California home the day prior. Survived by wife Olivia Aycock of Alamogordo son Robert E. Lockney in the US Army his mother and several siblings. Born May 28 1888 in Haskell Texas he worked in Alamogordo and was famed as a top Junior Linotype operator. He served with the 20th Engineers in World War I later ran the Indian Valley Record at Greenville California since 1931 and belonged to the American Legion and local chambers.
Pulakrosa Methodist Church announces a Christmas season service with the sermon Freedom from Fear. The text invites all to attend next Sunday, encourage a special offering for the Waco Orphan Home, and notes a family Christmas Festival in the church Undercroft on Thursday December 23.
Mrs. Vera Carter, a young Torrance woman, died by suicide Wednesday amid deep despondency and domestic troubles. She was childless and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert L Jones of Alamogordo.
The New Mexico School for the Blind in Alamogordo will present a Christmas program on Tuesday evening December 21 at eight. The event invites all to hear stories, music, and carols that celebrate the season.
The adjourned term of the county commissioners appointed Mrs. Etta Grisak to act as county clerk during Mr. Julian Pierce's Army service. The four week Jump Training included 250 foot tower jumps and mastering safe parachute technique earning the right to wear the Wings and Boots of the modern U S Army paratrooper.
The Alamogordo Business and Professional Women's Club held a regular Wednesday night gathering at Mrs. Kathryn McMurry's home. Mrs. Dorothy Seamans gave a book review on the Tree of Brooklyn. The State president is to be present at the next meeting.
Melvin Clarence Evans pleaded guilty before Judge Frenger to a crime involving a young Spanish American girl in Alamogordo and received a 20 to 25 year sentence in the state penitentiary. He claimed to be 13 but appeared older. deputies transported two additional prisoners, Willie Maese and Jian Martinez, who pled guilty to burglary.
Funeral services for Eli Moser were held at Geren Leadinghaus mortuary with Rev. Keating officiating. Interment followed at James Canyon cemetery near Cloudcroft. Moser, born December 4, 1862 in McDonald County Missouri, died December 10 at his Cloudcroft area home after years of illness. He longtime lived east of Cloudcroft, married Eva Bullard in 1887, and leaves four surviving children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was a Democrat and Baptist, known for his rugged pioneer character and fair dealings.
Miss Margaret Abi of Alamogordo has been selected to represent the Alamogordo Army Air Base as Sun Princess at the Paso Sun Carnival on January 1. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Jas R Abi, a 1940 Alamogordo High School graduate, former Band Pep Squad member, and a Quartermaster division employee at the base.
At Alamogordo Air Base Christmas week will feature carols, dances, and performances from December 1 through December 25. Highlights include a Sunday cafe, a Santa Claus visit with orchestra, a Christmas Formal, a Band gala night, a children's program, midnight services, and open house on Christmas Day with regional talent.
Friday night December 31 features Rube Arrington and his Orchestra at Holcomb's Feed Store. Admission is $1.10. Event listings note a social gathering with music and refreshments for patrons.
