Lilie J Ellsworth Dies at 55 in Alamo Gordo

Mrs. Lillie Jane Ellsworth wife of Walter Ellsworth News linotype operator and printer died Wednesday morning at their Michigan avenue home. She was 55 born April 16 1894 in Center Texas married in Corpus Christi in 1945 survived by a son Buster Guinn Houston and daughter Mrs Robert E Lee Corpus Christi with a late daughter Lucille and three granddaughters. Funeral services Friday at 8 pm Leadinghaus Mullins chapel Rev T J Gamble Jr officiating burial Mont Vista cemetery Ellsworth came to Alamo Gordo in August to join the News staff.

Binder Father Dies In Kentucky

Chas. Binder and son Gordon left for Waterloo Iowa after the death of J. P. W. Binder 80 in Louisville Kentucky where he suffered a fatal stroke while visiting a daughter. He had been ill a month and retired five months ago after nearly 63 years in flour milling. Funeral in Waterloo Thursday. He would have been 81 in January. Surviving: two other sons and one daughter.

Farm Bureau Plans Membership Drive

The Tularosa Local of the Otero County Farm Bureau held a meeting at the high school vocational agriculture building. Plans for an intensive countywide membership drive start in January and culminate with a full day Farm Bureau meeting on January 14 led by local county and state leaders. About 20 delegates and officers attend the national convention in Chicago December 11 to 15. Mrs. J C Johnson represents this area and travels with delegates from Carrizozo and Tucumcari.

Eugene Dale's Piggly Wiggly underwent a major remodel enlarging the store by about 250 feet and moving the meat counter back eight feet. New self service dairy cases new meat counters canned goods shelves produce racks and lighting fixtures were added during the remodel which was completed while business remained open.

Gifts Sought for Crippled Children at Carrie Tingley Hospital

Carrie Tingley Hospital for Crippled Children in Hot Springs New Mexico asks statewide residents to mail gifts of toys and clothing for patients of all ages to the hospital. Officials note the facility treats polio and aids families in need with 3229 patients since opening 12 years ago and offers daily visiting hours 2 to 4 pm.

2000 Kiddies See Santa Saturday

About 2000 children from Otero County crowded the Community Center on Saturday afternoon for a four hour Santa visit. Mrs Lillian Bagwell says Alamogordo Cham ber of Commerce and local merchants sponsored the event. Despite rain and cold youngsters waited in lines to greet Santa and receive peanuts candy and a balloon. County Commissioner Ray Sowell praised the merchants and Chamber and hopes the party becomes an annual event.

Man Suffers Broken Back In Accident Near Tularosa

George Dill of Havana Arkansas sustained a broken back when a Chevrolet pickup rolled over after a left rear tire blew out one and a half miles east of Tularosa Monday afternoon about 4 30. Mrs Dill had a concussion. Patrolman Al Hathaway and Robert Budahger investigated.

John Prather Home Destroyed By Fire

A ranch home off John Prather was burned to the ground Tuesday with all possessions lost except a cedar chest saved. The cause is unknown though the resident says the blaze likely started near the bathroom as workers outside attempted to fight the fire before it overtook the house.

Dick Riffe Found Dead In Home

Dick Riffe owner of Riffe's Dairy was found dead at his home 1901 Florida avenue late Wednesday afternoon by dairy employee Rob inson. Deputy Sheriff Ab Hunter reported the death at about 4 45 p m and coroner and jury were summoned. Death was due to natural causes per Dr F B Evans at the inquest. Survived by wife Peggy in Memorial Hospital two children Linda Anne aged 10 and Judy Kay 5 parents Mr and Mrs H H Riffe two sisters and one brother. Finergl arrangements are pending with Leadinghaus Mullins.

Hunter Estimate Shows 22 Percent Deer Bagged

State Game Warden Elliott S Barker reports early figures for the 1949 big game season indicating about 22 percent success among hunters. From key stations including Capitan area, 12 386 hunters were checked and 2 764 deer tallied, with 44 000 hunters estimated statewide suggesting roughly 9 680 deer killed.

Three Decorated At Holloman Base Honors Given

Captain Luther Faegin Lt Les ter Salter and Master Sergeant James Lauderdale were decorated by Colonel William H Baynes at Holloman Base. Faegin and Lauderdale received the Soldier's Medal for pulling a dazed pilot from a TE 80 aircraft that crashed on takeoff and exploded. Lt Salter received the Air Medal for 100 missions in Western Germany to Berlin as a transport pilot aidingAirlift.

Alamogordo Mayor Pleads Guilty To Speeding

Alamogordo mayor Eber D. McKinley admitted fault in Justice Court for driving 25 miles per hour over the limit on Friday. Justice J A Tatum fined him five dollars and two dollars fifty cents costs.
