Walters Trial Set For January
Trial for John Walters Bent storekeeper and postmaster charged with the murder of his estranged wife on November 19 was set for District Court on January 14. Walters waived a December 5 preliminary hearing and bond was reduced from 7500 to 5000. Walters is represented by George Shipley. Mrs Walters died after a shot fired from outside the building as she stood near a kitchen window at Ben Walters residence in Nogal Canyon near Bent.

Mrs Marian Day Pace 83 died December 5 at her daughter’s home after a long illness. Services are at 3:00 pm today at Mullins-O'Dell chapel. She was born July 21 1868 in Mississippi and lived in Otero county since 1909. Survivors include four daughters 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Burial Monte Vista Cemetery.

Will Instruct Committeemen on Program in Alamogordo
Otero county PMA committee men will meet in Alamogordo on Saturday December 8 starting at 9 00 a m to receive instruction from Extension Agent Walter Wade on the 1952 agricultural conservation program. After instruction they will contact farmers and ranchers in the county to outline the new program and set up conservation practices for 1952. Farmers are to be contacted between December 8 1951 and March 1 1952. The session continues the instruction program begun November 28 by a State PMA office group.

Otero County will advertise bids on November 30 for 11.127 miles of secondary road from Pinon toward Weed. State Highway Department advised commissioners to supply right of way easements as the resolution passed. The project starts a paved Pinon to Weed route funded by state and federal sources. Twelve miles remain to be paved to connect to Cloudcroft via Cox Canyon and Denney Bridge.

Settle On Price Of Right Of Way At Cloudcroft
County commissioners in ses sion Monday reached an agreement with P B Hendricks of Cloudcroft in which the county will pay Hendricks 600 damages to his property by the location of a road in Cloudcroft. The road traverses Hendricks property in connecting with Highway 83 through Cloudcroft. Of Hendricks property 12 of an acre was taken for the access road. Hendricks had originally asked the county 1 000 as damages on the premise that potentially valuable business property had lost its value.

Lincoln Officers Recover Stolen Car
A 1951 Chevrolet sedan owned by Sam Tanner of Pinon was stolen on December 5 from 1708 Teresa Lane after the Tanners learned of Marian Pace’s death. The car was found about eight miles east of Green Tree an hour later with Mario Digioia of the Bronx, who was being returned to Otero County Jail.

Policeman Tessman Held On Violent Assault Allegation
Earl E. Tessman a state policeman is jailed on a five thousand dollar bond after arraignment on charges related to an assault against two Mescalero women. The women Marcia Smith and Mary Randall testified they were driven from Tularosa to Alamogordo where Tessman allegedly forced them to strip burned them with a cigarette lighter and assaulted them. Witness statements detailed liquor taken from the State Police Station and from a fellow officer Bob Cook. Tessman admitted taking the liquor and driving the women but denied harming them. Preliminary hearing set for December 11.
