County seeks right of way easements for Highway 83 project

County commissioners report agreements reached with all but three property owners on the relocated Highway 83 route. About 6000 of 29810.10 dollars in motor vehicle funds have been used to obtain easements with remaining cost undetermined. Bureau of Public Roads may reallocate funds if easements are late. Tom Mann proposed underpasses and approach facilities for ranchers and farmers along the rights of way.

Christmas Musical Programs Set by Local Schools

The New Mexico School for the Blind, Alamogordo High School chorus, and Alamogordo Public Schools fifth to seventh graders announce festive Christmas performances. On December 14 at 3:30 p.m. the NM School for the Blind presents carols and instrumental items in the School Auditorium. December 16 at 8:00 p.m. the Alamogordo High School dramatic class and chorus present Joy To The World and The Shepherds Christmas in the Junior High Auditorium. December 17 at 8:00 p.m. the 5th to 7th grade chorus performs its Christmas program in the Junior High Auditorium with about 200 participants.

Unclaimed Otero Driver Licenses Listed in Alamogordo News

Authorities report 36 Otero County residents have not received their drivers licenses due to undeliverable or unclaimed mail. Licenses, many expiring in 1952, may be held at the Santa Fe Bureau of Revenue. Names from Alamogordo Tularosa Cloudcroft White Sands Mayhill Pinon Weed communities are listed with the notice.

P T A Meetings Postponed Until January

The grade and high school P T A meetings for December are postponed due to a busy Christmas schedule. Regular meetings resume in January with grade school on January 19 and high school on January 26.

Alamogordo City Building Edges Up in October

Alamogordo sees gradual rise in total 11 month construction to 2,239,403 aided by large housing projects and a Public Housing Project ground broken on Seventh St by Sanders Construction Co. of Snyder Texas with project total over 500,000 dollars. New residence permits total 37,300 with multiple named builders and addresses. Additions to dwellings and a shop permit are also listed with respective values.

Bliss Army Surplus Sale at Fort Bliss Texas

The Property Disposal Office at Fort Bliss will hold a surplus sale of Army Property. The Taxpayers' Association of New Mexico reports Otero County budgets total $176,683 more for the current fiscal year ending June 30, 1953 than the previous year. The figures cover county, municipal and school purposes, outlining the two-year comparison.

County to Assist in Surfacing of S P Plant Road

County commissioners discussed a cooperative plan to surface a quarter mile of road from Alamogordo city limits to the S P Tie Treating Plant. They cannot fund a black top project but offer county grading equipment gravel loader and gravel from the pit. SP must arrange material haulage. Plant Superintendent Gordon Prentiss will seek oil to eventually pave the route.

Vernon G. Thompson Named Assistant C P S Manager

Vernon G. Thompson a 31 year old native of Laurel Mississippi transfers to Alamogordo to become assistant manager under Ray Dean. He has five years experience at Community Public Service as power plant operator service man and merchandise manager. Thompson is married with one child and attends the Methodist Church.

Davis succeeds Johnson as CPS manager in New Mexico

Maurice W. Davis of Whitewright Texas is named division manager for New Mexico properties of Community Public Service Company. He will head the New Mexico division from Silver City with headquarters there, succeeding the late George Johnson who died in an automobile accident west of Las Cruces on November 18. Davis has led Northeast Texas properties and will move with wife Mrs. Davis and two sons Allan Barrett and John Edward to New Mexico after the new year.

Treasures Still Unclaimed Santa To Be Installed

The 3rd annual Treasure Hunt left 25 prizes unclaimed from 52 offered as 4000 registered. Merchants will change window numbers daily until prizes are claimed or Christmas. Alamogordo sets a January 12 city election under state law. Candidates must file a declaration and affidavit of qualification, with nominations by two qualified voters within districts. Voters elect from Second, Fourth and Fifth Districts while Mayors and other seats may be decided by write ins if no candidates file.

Rev Swanner Heads Ministerial Alliance

The Reverend R. L. Swanner of First Baptist Church was elected president of the Ministerial Alliance at the December 1 meeting. He succeeds Reverend H. H. Allen. Laurence D. Memorial Services For Buddy Cozart In New Mexico

The 11 year old Buddy Cozart who spent early years in Alamogordo Public Schools died after a Thanksgiving accident in Belen New Mexico. A rifle discharged in a back room as two friends returned from a hunting trip. Buddy died after multiple transfusions and weeks later his grandparents thanked relatives for floral tributes.

Robbins Addresses Holloman PTA At Base Meeting

Ray Robbins principal of Alamo Gordo High School spoke at Holloman PTA at Holloman Air Force Base School on Monday evening December 1. Myrtie Taylor's room provided refreshments and won the floating prize. Door prize went to Herschel King. O Dell Elected Head of Otero Red Cross

At the 1952 Otero County Red Cross meeting H G O Dell was chosen chair for the coming term. Conley N Chappell became vice chair, Mrs Frankie Dean was re elected treasurer, and Mrs Ruth Rolland secretary. The chapter marks 35 years of service with a 1917 charter framed in the Red Cross office.

D B Starley Passes Away in Yuma Arizona

D B Starley died in a Yuma hospital Sunday evening after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in Yuma. Starley had lived in Alamogordo for 183 years, operated a radio and shoe shop, and is survived by wife Mrs. Duane Anderson and several children including Glenn of Amarillo Elrod of Yuma and Or D Starley now of Yuma.

Local Men Enter Co op Trainee Program At NM A and M

Zeke Moya and Gilbert Aubel, Alamogordo High School graduates, join New Mexico A&M under the White Sands Proving Ground co op trainee program. Some 104 men are sought, with 54 starting at White Sands February 1, 1953 and 50 entering NM A&M. Korean veterans eligible for GI Bill benefits are favored. Applications use Civil Service Form 5000 AB and are filed at post offices. Examinations will be held in Las Cruces or Albuquerque. The program combines five years of study in Engineering Mathematics or Physics with half time field work at White Sands, alternating six months each. Trainees live at the school and receive GI benefits. pay applies during field training with no govt compensation beyond GI benefits.

Mescalero Resident Charlie Istee Buried at Mescalero

Charlie Istee of Mescalero died at Mescalero Indian Reservation Hospital at 1:00 AM Tuesday. Services were held Wednesday December 3 at the Dutch Reform Church with Rev. Ruben Ten Haken officiating. Burial followed in Mescalero cemetery. He was 80. Mullins O Dell handled arrangements.

Cecil Brown Dies At Southwestern Hospital

James Cecil Brown aged 45 of 900 8th Street died Tuesday after an operation at Southwestern General Hospital El Paso. Funeral details were pending Mullins O Dell to handle arrangements. His brother PFC Charles Malcom Brown was notified via telegram and Red Cross cable from Korea.
